I just read in another forum that the Windsor Via station is a $10 cab ride from downtown. What's with that? Is Windsor downtown dead?

Windsor is a border crossing town with a casino infestation along with shops catering to tourists, from what I remember from driving
the connecting road to Highway 401 and the "Inland customs port" on the east side of town from the Ambassador Bridge crossing.
A very congested route as well, plenty of traffic lights!!

Windsor’s new VIA Station (just opened) is actually in Walkerville……about 3KM NE of downtown.

It has fairly good Transit service on the Crosstown #2……every 15 min weekdays…..less on Sat/Sun and you can connect from the Tunnel Bus which loops through downtown Detroit.

The new station is adjacent to the one built by CN in the ’60s when the downtown station along the waterfront was closed. At one time, passenger trains were even ferried from the old station across the river to the GTW Station in downtown Detroit.

Windsor’s new station was one of the last to be replaced in the corridor which led to speculation that VIA was waiting to see if anything materialized on a crossborder VIA/Amtrak route through Detroit to Chicago. If this had happened, it would have required a new passenger route west of Chatham to be properly aligned for the Tunnel. To reach the Tunnel now from the new VIA Station would be a time consuming move over industrial trackage.

A "casino infestation?" I only remember there being one. The VIA station isn't too far from downtown, meaning the casino and its attached hotel or the other downtown hotels. If you are travelling light, it can be walked on a good day. The former railway right-of-way is now a park, so it is a pleasant stroll along the water-front. I concede that with the cold wet autumn weather now with us, this may not be a reasonable option until April.
