A bit strange, in that nz hasn't closed a railway for years, the last one been actually dismantled would be back in the 1990's.
But he is correct about long distance passenger trains, KiwiRail ceased running most because of COVID. They plan to bring them back as connecting tourist operations. Not daily operations, and of no use for making non tourist journeys. A Rocky mountaineer type operation.
In May , the govt releases its plan to meet our climate change obligations, hopefully rail benefits from that. But it's much more likely to be commuter and long distance commuter , than long distance service.
