where is this? How could they let people build so close to the railroad (to say nothing of building over it)?!?!?

i have no idea . Here is a link to the newspaper it appeared in . But no story to back it up . Its not unusal in 3rd world countries to have people build on the row , but this track appears to be in good condition .

Have a look at this video of a train passing through a market in Bangkok, especially the end showing what happens after the train has passed through

amazing! I remember been in Bangkok after heavy rain caused flooding . People who lived along the river were calmly sitting watching tv , up to their knees in water !

Here's a little more of that video of the train going through the market.

Here's a shot of the market as people go about their buisiness in the market...

... and here's the train coming through the market, but this clip shows the action of people packing up as the train approaches...

How about a view from the perspective of the train?

(NOTE: the footage is sideways, apparently the camera operator wanted to maximize their shot, but forgot to format it when they posted it on YouTube.)

Interesting utilization of space in a very cramped metropolitan area. Liability issues would not allow a makeshift market space like that here in the states.

I read about this video London-Brighton timelapse from a usenet group recently, and was a bit surprised it wasn't posted in this forum previously (since it's been around since Sep 2006 - I checked first before posting this):
London-Brighton Timelapse

Kinda like Sullivan's Port Jervis-Hoboken NJT timelapse
