As per the RFP for new Tier IV work locomotives all 19 of the E15s that the LIRR owns (4 were sold to NYAR of the original 23) will be traded in towards the purchase of 20 new engines. This means even the equipment that is OOS are going too. All seven of the E10s will be part of the trade as well.

How soon will the trade of the E15s and the E10s be happening? Is it going to happen all at once or is it going to happen in phases? Are the1500s that NYA has part of the trade as well?

The railroad is still in the RFP stage of the procurement process - identifying qualified contractors to do the work. New engines are two to three years out. The base order for new engines is 12 with two follow up options for four engines each - total of 20 new engines. The work engine fleet will be downsized from a combined number of 26 engines down to 20. The order also included a base order for two NYAR engines with six options for one engine each giving NYAR eight new locomotives. The NYAR fleet of E15s will not be traded in, it appears they are being sent out for rebuild and will be servicing the island's freight needs for many years to come.

Interesting note, the LIRR engines will be returning to the "wave" theme but with the New York State Pantone that is showing up on the many other new vehicle purchases by the MTA. Dark Blue for the majority of the body with the gold and light blue stripe. The spec calls for a GP style - design so it will be similar to what the GP-38s wore.

Two new protect locotomotives are being ordered by MTA Capital Construction for service in the ESA tunnels and for service in the East River Tunnels. Based on what I’ve read they will be a genset type of locomotive with a designed tractive effort sufficient to pull a 12 car EMU set from the tunnels with their steep grades.

154 and another (152?) were eastbound out of LIC around 1:15. Protects were 172 and another i forgot.

154 got the new paint and already looks ugly as sin.

If I was able, I would save #152, that is my Dad's last run engine and give it a "Good paint Job".

152 needs a good sandblast to get rid of the "house paint" layers and a trip to a good paint booth for a proper repaint.
However,if it's trade in fodder for tier IV power and the frame is still good,it will become a gen-set switcher,in the near future.

What a shame such a great fleet purchase in the mid to late seventies SW1001’s, MP15AC’s, and GP38-2’s. LIRR MofE/Transportation decision with a heavy influence from people who came over from the Milwaukee Road. That’s really good NYAR is keeping 4 of the MP15’s! What happens with the geeps?

It was #163,#152 and #164, it went by New Hyde Park at 2:21 PM/2:22 PM this afternoon, earlier this morning at 10:21 AM the RF1 were running light with #163 and #153 westbound from Atlantic Pipe. #154 the one which it left LIC yesterday afternoon it was seen sitting at Boland's Landing - Morris Park this AM, #150 was the Jamaica Protect today. It was a very busy day for RF1.

Came to LI to catch NY&A, 154 pushed a coach into Jamaica station, 167 was the protect engine, 161&164 at Queens Village, and a MofW train west thru Bellrose at 1018 with 163,153 & track sections

Yesterday 8/3 167 was the Jamaica protect.

Today 8/4 150 and 157 were seen heading west on the Hempstead branch in Garden City at around 2:30pm with gondolas in tow.

Earlier that morning #172 was sitting at Morris Park in the fuel pad area, it went by eastbound after 3:45 PM that afternoon in Queens Village.
#161 and #164 left the Queens Village team yard at 11:50 AM and headed westbound.
#163 and #153 was on the Hollis track at 10:40 AM.
