In the SL V's there's a SL IV mode switch to be made for deadhead moves only.

It most likely turns off most safety features that are communicated between the SL V's and alters the commands sent over the coupler to the same SL II - III - IV standard.

Kinda like why NJT Multi levels are run in solid sets.

I heard a 4-car bomber set with 2301 was on the Paoli Thorndale line doing a local run a few days ago
does anyone know why SEPTA did this?

I've also noticed a lot more off peak runs that normally have SLV's being covered by SLIV's recently. I wonder if the V's are in for their annual inspections?

6370/3755 had five single Silverliner 4's on Wednesday, July 29. Among them were cars 301 and 302, but alas they weren't next to each other. 297 was another one.

Would such a consist draw too much power?

All axles are powered on the SLIV's whether they are singles or pairs so the power draw would not be excessive. The only additional power draw would be for the compressors and motor / generator sets which are shared on the married pairs.

RS:

I will second Glenn here - no problems here with power draw on MU cars.

The AEM7s (and ALP44) in push pull service draw considerably more power - as much as eight MU cars...
That is the main reason for the restrictions of their use on the Reading side - no more then two trainsets
are normally assigned at any one time - to the West Trenton Line currently as far as I now know...

Today, single Silverliner 4s 409 and 410 were together and next to each other along with 405 and married pair 330-331 on 6370/3755. 409 brought up the rear on 6370 and led 3755. To the uninitiated, they could have been a married pair. But in a married pair, the even-numbered car would be on the Pennsy end, bringing up the rear on 6370 and leading 3755. At least the odd-numbered one had the lower number, like a 400-series married pair (unlike the 300-series married pairs like 330-331). Also, in even-numbered married pair 4s, the center section seats face the Pennsy direction, while in all single 4s, I believe they all face the Reading direction.

IIRC, the '400' series cars were originally the Reading 90xx singles that were renumbered after their PCB transformers were replaced.

The other day I saw an SL IV on the RDG side "flipped" so its pantograph was facing away from center city. Don't remember the number or whether it was a single or part of a married pair.

Update: It was single car 278, I saw it at Wayne Junction Shop yesterday.

Single cars 282 and 283 were next to each other on 326/6327 on November 16. As with normal married pair cars, odd-numbered 283 was on the Reading-pointing side. This would be like a 300-series married pair, with the even-numbered car lower than the other number.

326 was running close to a half hour late that day, picking up several 328 regulars, while some 326 regulars who have that option available to them got in their cars and drove to work.

A friend of mine saw a single car on the Delaware river bridge from route 29 earlier. Is this normal? Said it was going toward Pennsylvania.
