Are P40's and P42's both considered to be AMD-103's?

I ***think*** that the designation AMD-103 applies only to the P40, but I'm not 100% sure. (And for that matter, P40 is retroactive: I don't think it was used when the units were new.)

First off, AMD 103 stands for Amtrak Diesel--Top speed 103mph, for all you who didn't know....

Anyway, when the P40s first came out, I think they were called AMD 103 "Genesis". Then the P42 came out tand they went 110, so they renamed the first to P40 and the second became the P42, because they were a little different. But...You can call em whatever you want.

Actually only the first order of Genesis diesels, (800 series), were called the AMD-103. It stood for Amtrak Diesel 103 MPH, but that was too long. When the 700 series came out, the first Genesis diesels were renamed P40's (Passenger 4000 H.P.), and the second order were called P32's (Passenger 3200 H.P.). Unfortunately, this resulted in confused with the B32-8 widecabs which Amtrak also calls P32's.

AMD 103 was the Amtrak designation of the engineering design for Genesis series.
The official GE designation was P40-8 plus some other letters.
The dual mode was the P32ACDM and then they came out with the P42.
The name Genesis came from a GE empooyee contest for name of series.
The next in this series may be the P42ACDM-Gevo
