Signage went up this week about the impending closure of the IRT side of the 168th street station complex beginning on Saturday, January 5, 2019 until "early 2020" because of elevator replacement. As we all know, the elevators are the only means of egress from platform to mezzanine. (Unless 17 flights of stairs sounds cool...PASS)

There will be a new free out-of-system transfer between both 215th and 207 on the 1 and 207 on the A train on the upper end. Expect more insanity at 157th Street and 181st Street on the 1, as well as the M3, 4, and 5 buses as those are the suggested alternates. I would put money on the Bx7 and Bx20 getting more traffic as well on the upper end as people who would normally board the 1 at 231 and 225 to change to the IND at 168 to just ride down to Isham Street or 207th for the A.

168th Street's IRT level reopened for service on the evening of 12/20/2019.

It was supposed to reopen in March, so not too shabby.

Next on the list for elevator rehab is 191 Street, however, this time the station will remain open as you can still access the station from Broadway via the tunnel of broken dreams™. If you're looking for access on St. Nicholas Avenue though, forget it.

Further information about the rest of the uptown elevator replacement projects (and some pictures of 168) can be found here.
