(Split off from this thread: http://www.railroad.net/forums/viewtopi ... 4&start=15. Thanks Otto!)

Slightly off-topic question, though. That page lists only 2 generations of Shoreliners, but I always thought there were 3. Then at the open house a few weeks ago, there was one labeled as a "Shoreliner IV." So, without starting a whole new thread, how many generations are there?

1's which were the MN cars with no center door.

2 which is the CDOT non-center door.

3 which is the lower 6300's, and cab cars 6301-6310 (With engineers door).

3b which is the higher 6300's-6400's (including cab cars 6311-6320 no engineers door).

4 which are the center-doored Shoreliner CDOT cars (Red stripe). This has 2 cab cars 6221-22, and coaches 6280-6287.

In all, there are 5, but also added are the ex-West Of Hudson Pool Coaches which was called Comet IIA, and Comet IIB which has a few physical differences, but more noticeable in the step configuration at the doors. A had 3 steps, and the B had 2 steps. If you add the Comet's, it is 7.

Thank you.

There are 4 classes and they have nothing to do with CDOT cars, their cab cars fall in first two and in last series.
First series is end doors with cab indicators being light bulbs
Second series is end doors with Cab indicators being a LED panel.
Third series centerdoor with regular folding seat and desktop brake stand
Forth series centerdoor with fixed enginers seat and no door at engineers side

The Bomb cars are classified by their order number from Bombarier. The first batch are called "Project 19s", the second group are "Project 21's", then "Project 34's" (SLE cars), followed by "Project 38's" (Center door cars) and finally "Project 38A's" (Also center door cars). The last Bomb cars to arrive were 10 CDOT Project 38A's in 2001/2002.

OK, great. So we've identified the five different contracts (19, 21, 34, 38 & 38a) -- now who can identify what car road numbers were built under which contracts?

So, if I'm interpreting this correctly, the 19's are I's, the 21's are II's, the '38s are III's and the 38a's are IV's (but should be called IIIa's). The 34's weren't originally for MN, so they are sequence breakers.

As for why, largely to fix up the wikipedia article on Comets, which misidentifies them. I know, I'm a geek.

Well, for those of us that work on these cars, knowing which road numbers were built under which contract is important for.... oh say, looking up the correct electrical schematics, or finding a part in the correct parts catalog and the like.

I've already asked this question from Harmon and the response I got was: (silence) So, either that's because they don't know the answer, or because its a big secret. Neither would surprise me.

Oh man, in another five years we'll be looking at the 1984 order of Shoreliners for preservation candidates! I can see it now, a solid set of red-stripe Shoreliner coaches heading up the Naugatuck Valley behind a CDOT FL9...

Not very likely since the 1984 shoreliners are being overhauled in Dansville,NY, they will be good for another 15 to 20 years

Much smarter than what NJT is doing, replacing most equipment with MLs.
