I asked about them when I first moved to Boston and my friend from Arlington told me they went up when the Pope visited sometime in the '80s.

I don't know if this is true or not, but it is what I was told.

I jokingly tell my friends that they are sign language for Inbound and Outbound. :)

Secondary meanings include the American Sign Language shorthand for "Boston", and directional indicators for the trains which pass beneath.
