About what year would you figure ?

I think about 1955 when steam was to be retired.

The tender appears to be as follows; The last twelve G5's 39-50, delivered in 1929-30, came with these tenders, also class 110P82a. Notice the line of rivets near the top below the equipment trust plate and the longer collar at the top of the coal space. The conversion involved removing the inner sloped sides of the coal space. These were originally sloped because these tenders were built for stoker firing, hence the line of rivets at the top. The coal space was shortened, a 45 degree slope sheet put in and the deck height was raised to match the G5 firing deck.

The passenger car (#454, 464, 484?) behind the G5s and Lines West tender is definitely in the Tichy scheme, as is the MU car at the left. Definitely not in the dark Tuscan Red scheme.

Tichy scheme was inaugurated on 11/01/49 per the "Long Island Railroader" This image can't be prior to that and, as it's summer, it would have to be 1950 thru 1954. Windows open, employee in cab in short sleeves, trees in background full leaf. Tichy was on cars during those years. If we could determine the road number of the locomotive we could tell for sure whether this was 1950 or later. Without a road number to check, and with the cars not looking like they've been recently painted, I'd go with c. 1951-52.

The dark-on-light number on the car at right-- were they all like that?
It's a Tichy scheme: http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/lirrcontents.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The LIRR installed ATS (or was it ATC?) in 1952 according to Zeil. This involved adding a roller bearing to the first axle of the second truck of the tender for a speedometer.

Since this tender has the roller bearing, it has to be at least 1952.

There is also the small rectangular bulge on the front of the MU train under the engineer's front window for ATC installed after 1950. So yeah probably 1952-56. Last steam ran in 1956, right?

Great! Is it ATS, ATC, ASC (automatic Speed Control)? Thanks

On LIRR, it is ASC.
