Wow, there's some great stuff here. I pop in to the Amtrak forum now and then, but I didn't realize there was a photography forum until now.
Anyway, here's a few contributions to the topic. These two were shot with a Canon S50 digital camera, hand held, but steadied by a fixed object.
I shot this from the vestibule of #14 in Oakland last February. I got in scolded by the attendant for opening the window. It was worth it.
On that same trip we saw this when we got off in Salem. I held my digital camera against a lightpost.
These links are to pages of a 2002 travelogue which contain several night shots. They were shot on film, all hand-held, with a 24mm lens. The scans were done on an older scanner, so they aren't real crisp, but you get the idea.
