Well im new in night photography as i only took my first night shot a few weeks ago. But with my second shoot tonight i figured i would post it here. Feel free to post any of your night shots in this topic.

From tonight i got this shot of NYSW SU99/Q271 as a BNSF articulated autorack was going past me

East Deerfield yard at dusk. Sort of cheated on this one, as I did some lightening with my graphics program

This one is my best night shot so far... and the first! I was lucky because of the lightpost and the engine being still

Thats all I can offer so far. Nothing much... :(

Night photography is more fun than shooting in daylight. I guess it is just the fact that you never know how the pic will come out when in the dark. Also, photographs look more dramatic at night than the typical daylight roster shots. [/img]

Well, the one I posted was no flash, 6-sec exposure, auto f-stop, and of course a tripod. But I'm very low tech. So I'm sure ther members can tel you more.

I dont really use the flash i just set the camera to the night mode so that the shutter stays open longer. But i have another shot i got a few weeks ago that is my best night shot yet thanks to the use of a tripod.

For good night shots you should have two things:
1. Tripod (the heavier the better)
2. Digital or film camera that allows you to work in manual focus as well as manual exposure.

Optional:

1.Remote release cord
2.Artificial light source
------------------------------------------->

Set the camera on the tripod and manually focus on your subject. Next take a guess at the exposure needed. I usually start at 10 seconds at f8 and then take more shots at 15, 20, 25 seconds, or as long as it takes for me to run around the subject with a flash gun during the exposure...
As long as you keep moving you can walk in front of the camera and still not show up in the picture. It's all trial and error.

The book "The Railroad Night Scene" has a detailed explanation of various night photography techniques, as well as instructions on how to direct your flash, and has diagrams showing the way that many night shots in the book were set up, as well as having a couple hundred color night photos illustrating use of the techniques.

Here's one of a Shore Line East train arriving at Old Saybrook. Unfortunately, the engine passes the station before coming to a stop.
