The Saga of Sputhlands Wooden Railway, 1864 - 1867, complete with poem and stained glass window. (Sorry the post above doesn't work. I can't get rid of it, perhaps David can.)

"The Lady Who Raced the Train"

"Na na," she cried in quite a flurry,
"I'd rather walk, I'm in a hurry.
"So puff awa' in a' your glory,
"I'll be in town an hour afore ye!"

Photos: a nostalgic look at the TSS Maori
a Maori gentleman saying "Welcome to NZ."
There is usually bare buttocks involved in that welcome, Philip. a Maori activist once delivered one to the Queen, and his defense was that he was wearing flesh coloured underpants. I think Prince Phillip would have seen the humorous side of that.

The prince, perhaps; but not this Philip; I'm a little more prim than that.
I understand that full blooded Maori no longer exist.

For the record, I really enjoy the first half of the post I started this thread with, "An Inspiring Collection Of Historical NZ Rail Footage Prepared For Tranz Rail Rebranding 1995."

Cab ride on the last steam train Waikokopu to Gisborne. It's funny, instead of the fireman flinging coal into the firebox, he dribbles it into a box, using a large scoop and a funnel. It was probably burning oil by this time. Engine is Ka942.

Here's a Wiki article on the Ka class.

Here's a paragraph on the 492, from the above article.
"KA 942 was preserved by Ian Welch in 1972, after having been laid up at Hutt Workshops as a possible addition to 3 K Class locomotives being used as a stationary boiler supply. It was moved to Steam Incorporated and some limited work was done on restoring it, however by the mid-1980s it had been moved to Otaki for open air storage. In 1989 it was moved to the Glenbrook Vintage Railway where it was restored to working order, and main line certified - first running from 1990, wearing its former streamline shrouding. Initially based out of the Mainline Steam Heritage Trust's Parnell depot, it alternated between Parnell and Christchurch before being moved to Wellington in 2001 so that a comprehensive 10-year overhaul could be conducted. KA 942 returned to service in 2008."

Actually, it is a very debatable point. Moari were decimated by European disease and war, and intermarriage was quite common. There were few European women in colonial NZ.
Many Maori can certainly trace their Whakapapa back to the original settlers, but few if any could guarantee no outside influence on both sides of every parent.
But it also a stretch to say there are definitely no full blooded Maori left. It is possible there are some , just impossible to prove.
