I've received word that the Shenandoah Valley Railroad's No. 8701, an RS4TC, has been scrapped. Its body, minus trucks (sold to a railroad in Iowa), was spotted at the Cresson Steel Company in PA. A source in the valley tells me the locomotive hadn't run in years, could only pull a few cars at a time and had a problem overheating. It was built in February 1954 at US Army 4042 and later became Defense Logistics Agency 87001, assigned to the DLA base in Bellwood, VA, just south of Richmond. Acquired by the SV, it was renumbered 8701, dropping one of the zeroes assigned by DLA.
