Algoma Central current status

Post by riffian » Mon Jul 06, 2015 7:03 pm

Has the new passenger operator offered reliable, timely service after their false start? Looking at a trip up that way. What are the CN freight operations like these days....I've heard thrice weekly and I've also heard daily. Any info appreciated.

I would, honestly, call one of the camps up there that relies on the service prior to making any bookings.

Tatnall Camp has a good handle on the situation and can be reached at 705 856 - 4901 or at tatnallcamp@sympatico.ca

They're good people and have been of great assistance in the past.

Hope this helps,

M

It seems the takeover of the Sault-Hearst passenger operations was a bust. Regular service will end next week according to a Canadian National spokesman. The last run will take place on July 15. Fortunately the Agawa Canyon tour train will continue.

The passenger train service between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst, Ont., will cease July 15, 2015, CN said today.

The termination stems from the inability of the train’s current operator, Railmark Canada Ltd., to obtain financing.

CN discontinued its operation of the passenger train on May 1, 2015.

Why hasn't VIA taken any interest in this route?

It's federal money and VIA is a federally owned crown corporation. Furthermore, they're in the business of passenger rail.

With what money? VIA are concentrating on SW Ontario service in near term expansion. There's probably a dozen routes they would reopen first for ridership or politics if they got a bit more subsidy, like Toronto-North Bay or the Vancouver Island service

The federal government has set aside money to run a passenger on the ACR line. They have a train. All VIA would have to do is provide a train crew to run it.

Assuming the amount of money involved is enough for VIA to want to crew it at their pay rates with no nearby crew base and it connects with Canadian in the middle of nowhere. They must lose a bucketload on Sudbury-White River as it is.

Edit: if anything, a VIA service from Sault-Sudbury-North Bay might have something to be said for it, but that should have been part of an expanded ONR network before the Ontario Liberals gutted ONTC.

Algoma Passenger Train

Post by MikeCDN » Wed Oct 21, 2015 1:21 pm

What is the current state of the passenger service on the ACR?

I've heard conflicting stories that it's on hiatus or that it's gone fog good now.

Thanks in advance,

M.
