While somethings have to be metric (road signs, gas prices, etc.) there are no regulations requiring the use of metric measurements in speech. There is no metric police wondering around smashing peoples' heads in for failing to state a distance in metres. In fact Canadian railways (with some exceptions) still use miles for distance and speed.

For the record, it was 1 mile or 1.6KM.
We've had GE's catch on fire on AMTK, too-- a real bad one out of Denver on the Front Range years ago.
