Bob (American), Herb Kelleher(Southwest), and Oscar Munoz (CSX and United) knew more details about airline operations than most VPs I've encountered. What all three have in common is they spent plenty of time in cockpit jumpseat, galleys and airport break rooms.
They were truly interested in hearing from all levels of employees. That openness as a 20-something year old manager made me entirely unafraid of titles.
I'm sure the current CEOs try, but the interest seems to me to be more about the photo op than intellectual curiosity or sincerity...
