TWU 234 - Strike on 11/7?

TWU 234 (buses, trolleys,subway union) has voted to authorize a strike, potentially starting on November 7th.

Members of Transport Workers Union Local 234, the largest workers' union for SEPTA, met on Sunday to issue their votes, with 100-percent of those in attendance voting in favor of a strike.

According to a union representative, not only are they fighting for more pay, but their main concern is safety and security issues.

The union has been meeting with SEPTA regarding these concerns since July.

Now, this could impact people who rely on SEPTA service if a deal isn't hammered out by midnight, November 7

If this sounds vaguely familiar, it's because this current contract was only a 1 year contract.

AC - As I questioned in 2023 TWU 234 has now authorized a CTD strike with the expiration of the one year
contract on November 7, 2024. Read my last post from one year ago today about this subject -

If only Pennsylvania could enact a "no-strike clause" similar to NYS Taylor Law, this issue wouldn't have to happen every other year.

A substantial ridership loss could be a significant problem as SEPTA continues a long term recovery
from the depths of "The Problem" 4 1/2 years ago back to averaging today 80 percent of 2019 levels...

Mentioned is a list of 12 CTD strikes against SEPTA by TWU Local 234 previously (since 1975) -
1975, 1977, twice in 1981, 1982, 1983, twice in 1986, 1995, 1998, 2005 and 2009.

The longest strike against SEPTA was the 108 day Regional Rail in 1983 - in which the major problem
was to be large cuts in railroad employee salaries...This was right after SEPTA took over direct operation
of the then-separate sides (PC and RDG) of the Commuter Rail system from Conrail on January 1, 1983...

What was then proposed was to "transitise" what was originally known as "Regional High Speed" by
lowering as example various railroad union employee crafts to CTD wage levels - which meant a loss
of up to 25% pay in some instances - therefore bringing on the 108 day strike in Spring 1983...

Let's hope just as one year ago cooler heads and rational thinkers prevail -

Well this isn't TWU234 but SMART Local 1594 authorizes a strike.

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (WPVI) -- Suburban SEPTA bus, trolley, and train operators voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike on Friday.

SMART Local 1594 represents more than 350 drivers that service Montgomery, and Delaware and Chester counties.
