TV&C from Sandusky to Cuba

This thread is for discussion of the TV&C narrow gauge from Sandusky south to Cuba.

In the Wyman Bridge thread, members have posted that they have found remnants of the TV&C grade around Crystal Lake.

I've seen the narrow gauge row behind the current Rushford school.

Pat C has a picture of a TV&C passenger train with the large house in the background.

The row would be where the mailbox is.

This is the former TV&C station in Rushford. It was split in half with an addition in the middle:

I don't think it has been moved. The driveway is the narrow gauge row.

The cross should be where the TV&C row was behind the Rushford school.

Pete Davies showed me this location.

Pete also told me that his dad or grandpa used to own a farm just outside of Rushford. He remembers when they plowed under the TV&C row when he was a kid.

I still have a piece of rail which was plowed up near the Rushford school. The TV&C engine house was located in the field north of the school. A freight station was located across the street from where the old Agway mill is now. The late Bill Reddy told me once that all TV&C trains originated in Rushford acording to a time table he had.
I discovered one good way to locate the right of way is with a metal detector. Aparently, when the track was pulled up they simply dropped the spikes on the ground and left them.

Pete is quite correct about dropping spikes. We used a metal detector to find the route of the Lackawanna & Pittsburgh at Belfast Junction. We found spikes that were more than a foot down. Obviously we had both a detector and a shovel. In those days spikes were of no salvage value. So take a detector along when you indulge in railroad archaeology! H.T. Guillaume

#2 is the big house that has a narrow gauge passenger train in front of it in a photo that Pat Connors has.

#3 has to the TV&C r.o.w. based on the picture.

#4 is the still standing TV&C station. The r.o.w. would be north of the house.

#5 is where I think the TV&C r.o.w. is. Pete Davies showed me this section once. The r.o.w. ends at a creek. There must have been a good-sized bridge there.

Using Russ Nelson's Open Street Map of the TV&C r.o.w, I think I have found a few places where the roadbed could be seen.

The tracks were torn up between Cuba and Rushford in 1894. Of course that was 130 years ago.

From reading the TV&C newspaper articles, I think the TV&C grade was in better shape between Cuba and Rushford. North of Rushford is where the tracks were built on "stilts."

I revised the routing in OpenStreetMap a bit using your research, thanks for sharing it!

Cuba to Rushford was approx. 15 miles.

I was at the Arcade Historical Society today.

I saw the picture of a 2 car TV&C passenger train.

The baggage car is marked TV&C.

The train is on trestle work.

The train is not in front of the house on Rt 243 in Rushford like I said above.

I think its the same house in the background of the train photo.

The lady at the historical society said she would scan it and post it at the Arcade Historical Society Facebook page.

So that is two pictures of a TV&C train that we have.

So today I headed to B&S Road that is built on the B&S grade.

Just to the right of the road as it leveIs off I found a short stretch of the TV&C grade! It's heavily overgrown, but you can tell it's a former grade.

I also went behind the Rushford school and took pics of the TV&C grade there.

I went across the creek and looked for the TV&C grade. It's plowed under.
