There is a detailed article on the Timken 4-8-4 locomotive in Railway Mechanical Engineer (RME) 1930 June, pp.316-324. That issue is available on-line, at: https://archive.org/details/sim_railway ... 0-06_104_6.

As might be expected, there is an emphasis on the roller bearing complement, but the locomotive as a whole is described. The roller bearing application extended to the Franklin booster. Pertinent to this thread: https://railroad.net/blind-drivers-vs-l ... l#p1579861, there is a good diagram of the Alco lateral motion device used on the leading driving axle.

Cheers,
