Had followed the train out of Ithaca that day with my VW "Bug". Parked east of the embankment and hiked across a field in order to grab that photo.

The train consisted of 21 empties and 64 loads of coal.

Yes, the A&I Branch closely followed the east shore of Cayuga Lake.

Yes, both this line and the line along Owasco lake were very close for part or most of the distance. This is why they were able to make money leasing the land after train service ended. Everyone wanted camps and they jammed them in anywhere they could, the rail bed provided more access than was previously possible.
