Crews erected a temporary metal pole and canvas type structure over the end of one of the RIP
tracks several weeks ago and I'm guessing that's where the painting took place - not exactly ideal
taking into account temperature and humidity controls.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed it. 😬 😂

Today's edition of SLR train 393 with 4023-3007-3004 leaving the fuel track at Lewiston Junction at 1900 and
passing through South Paris with 29 cars at 2110.

Hello,
This morning's SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0737 with the following:

RM-1 806
GP40-3 3806
GP40 3004
17 centerbeam flats
3 boxcars
7 covered hoppers
19 tank cars

That's 46 cars total, including 2 loads and 44 empties.

There's still a couple of slow orders remaining from the flooding: MP 2-3 along the Pherrins River and MP14-15 on the bridge over Number Six Brook just south of Norton.
Have a great weekend,
Fritz

Hey everyone, I'm new to the boards here.

Does anyone know roughly how many trains per week tend to run through Berlin? I recently moved to the area and I haven't been able to catch anything passing through yet, I've heard the horn a couple times but only late at night.

Additionally, is there any kind of list of the yards that SLR uses regularly? I'm not familiar with rail in the area yet and I know where some of the sidings and yards are, but I haven't gotten lucky with seeing any engines around.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to hanging out and contributing here when I can.

393 (west) and 394 (east) are the road trains, which are all you'll see in the Berlin area these days. They typically run 2-3 times a week, meeting behind the former Issacson Steel plant over on 110 headed towards Milan/Groveton at the yard there; the two crews swap trains and head back to their respective terminals.

The meet generally occurs after 9/10 pm, as the two crews generally go on duty around 7pm at both Island Pond, VT (394), and Lewiston Junction, Maine (393).

Those are the only three yards any power would be seen in, as the only locals run out of the Maine side, and 393 generally holds at IP, departing around 7-9 am for Quebec as noted in the post above yours.

Thanks for the info, I guess there goes my hopes for catching some daytime shots of a train crossing the causeway on the Androscoggin or going through Berlin unless I get lucky with them moving at an odd time. Maybe I'll need to at least try for some nighttime photography sometime soon.

Other than rail trains or MoW/plow extras, your chances there are slim to none, as the 18:00/19:00 on duty time is very consistent. They've dropped plenty of rail over the last few years to finish up the CWR install, so we might not see any of those trains for a long while.

The last time they ran the road freights in daylight was 12/30/19, and that was a one off thing. They ran in daylight in spring 2018 when the line in Quebec was blocked by a bridge collapse for a few months, but otherwise it's been all night moves for the road freights for the 11 years I've been following the line.

Your best bet is to travel to Maine during the summer, where you can generally get them east of Bethel before the sun goes down.

4022 has come out of the paint booth, also in a G&W heritage "whisker" scheme.

QGRY 4019 came down on last night's/ this morning's 394, and appears to be next for paint. They outlawed at S. Paris.

Drove by Lewiston Junction today after lunch just in time to see yard crew pushing 4019 into
the paint booth; 4024 still sitting on rip track with 5904. Also noted dark red HCLX 3868 sitting
at the far east end of the fuel track.

Hello,
I stopped by the bridge over Number Six Brook just south of Norton on Thursday night (approximately MP 15 on the Sherbrooke Sub). They have started preparing to do repairs to the bridge abutment, but it is not clear (to me) what they plan to do, but it is clear why they have a 5 MPH slow order over the bridge! Here are a couple of photos:

They will likely pull out the blocks which have sagged and will pour a concrete footer along the foot of the abutment. Once that is done, they will reset and grout those blocks into place, before building up the footer in front of those blocks so they can't kick out, and then armoring up the front with heavy rip rap. Its similar to work done at Seven Mile Stream on the CSX Augusta IT a few years ago, as well as several bridges on Maine Northern.

Hello,
This frosty morning, SLQ westbound 393 departed Island Pond at 0747 with the following:

SD70MAC 4023
QG SD40U 6904
GP40-2 3035
QG SD70MAC 4019
GP40 3004
8 centerbeam flats
12 hi-cube boxcars
4 covered hoppers
22 tank cars

That's 46 cars total, including 1 load and 45 empties.

The QG SD70MAC 4019 was dead-in-tow and appeared to be freshly painted, although the paint appeared pretty thin.

Apparently, they are running extra trains tonight.
Best,
Fritz
