I was at the Town of Perinton offices on Turk Hill Rd yesterday. There is a nice display of Can Company memorabilia down at the end of the building where the tax collector is (just follow the signs that say "Pay Taxes"). There is a large aerial photo of the Can Company, that includes a por...

I attended that auction. It had "a little bit of everything", but the primary focus seemed to be GE industrial locos and parts. Several locos were auctioned off at the site, including a nice little 25 ton GE. There were other manufacturer's parts, as well; I recall an entire pallet of new ...

Delivery dates for Y-2 class

by jr ¦  Thu Dec 29, 2016 2:43 pm ¦  Forum: New York, Ontario, and Western Railway ¦  Topic: Delivery dates for Y-2 class ¦  Replies: 2 ¦  Views: 3620

Does anybody have the approximate delivery dates for the Y-2 locos? I know the year was 1929; was hoping to locate the month, if possible.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Salamanca - Early Conrail

Most of the Bradford Division was abandoned upon startup of Conrail on 1-Apr-76. The Brockway-area coal traffic was rerouted via former PC lines. The did retain a small bit of the former Erie trackage in the City of Bradford, and had several customers there, into the 1990s. So there may have been a ...

There continued to be interchange traffic between the B&O and CR into the early 80s, at least. That much power in Salamanca, at that date, might imply a coal train was expected in the near future. The old interchange track over to E. Salamanca was still active then.

Erie used the Chicago and Western Indiana track to get into Chicago. The change from Erie RR tracks occurred around the Indiana / Illinois border. Erie passenger trains terminated at Dearborn Station on Polk Street. The station still stands, but the train shed and tracks are long-gone. The station i...

How long did the C&EI use their one and only BL1? According to Diesel Locomotive Rosters , a compilation of Railroad Magazine articles, the BL1 and both of their BL2s were "rebuilt , then traded to GM-EMD for 239-241 (2/63)". So it appears to be approximately 15 year careers for all t...

An interesting discussion; wish I had seen it sooner. I have a copy of Chesapeake and Ohio BL2 Diesels by John C. Paton, published by the C&O Historical Society. It is 64 pgs, soft cover, and covers the 14 PM/C&O units in some detail, and also has a short chapter on the WM units, which came ...

In addition to the transition issues, I have wondered whether another part of the problem with the GP35 could have been that the 567 block had reached (or possibly surpassed) its practical limit. The same basic 16 cylinder block was good for 1350 hp in 1939, but with various "minor" upgrad...

That's a good point about the brakes. The description of the separation and collision appears in several newspaper articles. Hadn't occurred to me, to question those accounts (and I have not seen any official report). Both Wellsville and Olean were active petroleum centers at the time, and both on t...

I believe that your list would be about right for the Erie Lackawanna, starting in the early 60s. However, the Erie RR changed crews approximately every 100 miles for many years. I think 100 miles was considered a standard "day's work" for a long time. From Erie Memories (Crist) Marion Div...

The collision occurred just East of the bridge over the Olean Creek. I believe that a portion of the derailment made its way down the bank, into the creek-bed itself. The (Westbound) train had parted someplace in Hinsdale. The crew was apparently unaware of this, and as the front of the train slowed...

I've read that the hydraulics took longer to reverse direction, than a diesel-electric. Something about the gear boxes needing to get properly meshed, before the throttle could be opened. (Perhaps not a big consideration with road units, but another small drawback to add to the pile).
