Re: How might a broken rail be discovered?

I think lirr42 is simply making statements to rile people on here. For the time being, until some material that surpasses steel that does not stretch, contract, rust or wear can be invented that is suitable for rail, this is what we have to work with. Maybe after we exhaust our iron ore deposits, w...

What is forgotten here is that the Railroad would rather the rail break, than kink. When it breaks, it cuts the signal/ASC circuit to their most restrictive aspect. The rail is installed under tension. Meaning, the track department when installing new rail, soaks a rope with kerosesne, lays it alon...

Leave the anti-union and disability talk to the Editorial Board and Alfonso Castillo of Newsday. Long Island Tool eloquently addressed the contract issue and the Disability story with us. The outdated contract provisions and things like the Disability scams have cost, and continue to cost, the fare...

I believe you have it wrong, Mrs. 42. When men were men , we handled our own debates amongst ourselves and not involve our women in it. I guess traditional values are not practiced amongst your household. LIRR42 bamboozles us with inconsistent information that has been exploited amongst people in m...

And it was all over the New York metro area news last week that this was the third coldest winter on the records for this area. I'm not a meteorologist, but the average temperature over the course of the winter doesn't tell you all that much about whether or not the weather conditions contributed t...

The next question then is this: Is there some way to reconfigure Jamaica so that the number of trains operating thru can be increased AND thru-FBA service can be retained? You asked that question on page 1 and I offered an answer on page 2 : Does anyone know if they're keeping ANY thru-service to F...

Lots of this doesn't make much sense. Some points in particular: So you basically want conductors to be police, making it so that they have to demand ID from fare evaders so they can issue these tickets which can lead to further confrontation when they are the only employee on the entire train not o...

Gotcha, I thought so, but wasn't sure as STY wasn't listed on the previously posted list of Yardmasters.

Is the Jamaica Yardmaster being mentioned here also the same person for Jamaica Storage Yard (the diesel yards about 3,000 feet west of the station platforms)? It seems like locating them more in the vicinity of the 'former' JAY tower would make them more equidistant to the three big yards (from a g...

lirr42, your statistics are comprehensive, but irrelevant to the circus train move. That train did not pass through Queens Interlocking until about midnight-hardly rush hour with the domino effect you described. I didn't describe a domino effect...all I said was it delayed one train, which then pas...

And remind me again why weekend Huntington service is basically half-hourly while weekday midday is hourly????? Yes, that would be adding service. A "fun fact" or sorts regarding West of Huntington service... there's actually more trains going from Huntington to New York on weekends then ...

LIRR42 - I just want to make you are aware since it's all about the numbers and fine details with you. The railroad got lucky with the engineer of the circus train move. The circus has provided a respectable infusion to the local economy. Originally, they were going to have 2 trains head back west,...

The "drop-'n'-go" operation that Tommy mentioned might work and actually reduce delays during the rush-hours when there are plenty of trains running on all routes, so the wait at Jamaica shouldn't be too long. But during off-peak hours it might not work very well as there can be a much lo...

At present, of forty-nine westbound morning Peak trains from the Hempstead, Long Beach and Far Rockaway branches, twenty-nine of them go to Penn Station and twenty to Brooklyn. Are trains from those branches routed to Brooklyn because of their ridership -- a high percentage going to Brooklyn? -- or...

I also agree there may be a learning curve involved. None of the proposals are set in stone, they can be modified over the next few years. It's just that although ESA is still four or five years away, it's not that long. They have to start planning now. I wouldn't be surprised, given the volume of ...
