Haven’t been here in awhile. Extending to Phoenixville would definitely be good and could open the door to dual-mode extensions elsewhere. I looked at Phoenixville on Google Maps and it appears NS has moved the double-to-single track interlockings back a few hundred feet at both approaches to the Bl...

That’s what threw me - the horn sounded like a SLV.

Push-pull set including a Sprinter made a round trip to (I assume) Warminster midday today, towed by an end-cab diesel. Didn’t catch any numbers, since I only saw it from a distance/from the car. It was through Jenkintown around noon and inbound through Willow Grove at 1:15. If it was a qualifying r...

Does anyone/any website have any current NS train symbols around Harrisburg, PA?
Yes! Check out http://www.parailfan.com - lots of good stuff there including a searchable train symbol database. Gives you origin, destination, lines used, days of operation. Seems to be pretty up-to-date.

Seems to be a lot of work going on besides the bridge rebuild and the shift of CP Plymouth. The concrete at the top of the bridge abutments where the Morrisville Line goes over Susquehanna Rd was redone this year. Completely removed and new caps poured. They only did 3 sides though - both sides on t...

Was 901 on break-in runs the past couple days? Heard a different horn blowing for Rydal Rd yesterday and today. At first I thought it was CSX coming from Woodbourne in daylight, but then I realized it could be 901 stretching its legs on the West Trenton Line.

Flagging crossings in Willow Grove

Tonight I saw a Warminster-bound set of SLV's with a crew member on the ground, flagging thru Davisville Rd and York Rd crossings, possibly through Moreland Rd also. All automatic protection appeared to be working normally. Why would a flagger be needed? It's not the first time I've seen that scenar...

Re: North Broad Station-logic and necessity of stops

NB was supposed to be for the Reading what North Philadelphia was to the PRR - a convenient spot for uptown residents to catch a long distance train. B&O's Royal Blue was supposed to stop there in addition to the Crusader and Wall Street, but for various reasons it never really developed as plan...

I wonder why we in the US don't use something a little more energy-absorbing at the end of track, instead of a giant chunk of steel or concrete. We seem to love electronic technology, but something with a bit of mechanical sophistication like the European style bumper could have at least mitigated t...

Above all, condolences to the MOW workers' families and speedy recovery to the engineer and passengers. As an Amtrak customer that day heading west on the Pennsylvanian, I was frustrated that Amtrak's website for alerts and service disruptions didn't have anything about the incident at 10AM. Nor did...

Perkiomen Jct improvements (Harrisburg Line)

I noticed there are new signals at Forge and at Perkiomen Jct. on the Harrisburg Line. Also looks like the stub of the old Perkiomen Branch has been reconditioned and cleared of brush, and there's a bit of a shine on the rails. Anyone know if the signal improvements are for PTC or just part of a gen...

But more seriously, trails have their own constituency. They're important from a recreational and health standpoint and become a kind of linear green space providing opportunities that are almost always difficult to replace if a route is reactivated. That makes "de-abandonment" a zero-sum...

"layoff track" at bethlehem,pa mp 88
The Reading regularly referred to short passing or storage tracks as "layoff" tracks. There was a "Chelten Hills Layoff" just south of Jenkintown, to the west of the eastbound (inbound) main track, for instance.

Re: REGIONAL RAIL POSITIVE TRAIN CONTROL [PTC] IMPLEMENTATIO

No, it was down near Rydal. I haven't ever seen a one-car train there, and the fact that it was on the outbound track but headed inbound was odd. Plus based on the time and its speed, it seemed to be a deadhead move so I thought maybe some PTC testing was happening.

Saw a one-car consist running wrong-main on the West Trenton Line tonight. Possibly PTC testing?
