That would be like reducing the hours of a busy pizzeria in Colorado just as a new marijuana shop is going in next door!!
Why would Maine Eastern decide NOW to reduce services in light of there being a new rail connection at Brunswick??? The new connection definitely increased the possibility that I'll want to use the ME's service to Rockland and I'm sure other people were giving this more consideration as well.
The DE certainly didn't hurt, but... Freeport receives over 3.5 million visitors annually. That's nearly 10,000 folks per day, on average (and we're talking about an above average time of year). The train brought in 27 per day in November, and indications are, fewer in December. And (1) Some of tho...
Greg Moore wrote:As a reminder, there is an option on 70 additional Viewliner cars if Amtrak can come up with money and the need. I think the need is becoming more and more obvious. The need was apparent years ago when they only ordered 50.
By the way... with the new Downeaster extension to Brunswick, I wrote the Maine Eastern to inquire if they would be coordinating their schedules to permit connections to/from Amtrak trains at Brunswick from/to ME trains from/to Rockland. Gordon Page from ME replied back to me; "Thank you for yo...
While this may be a bit off topic, can someone tell me about getting a taxi at North Station after my wife and I arrive on the Downeaster. As North Station is nowhere near as busy with long distance rail travel as South Station, I never noticed a clearly marked cab stand with taxis waiting at North...
I can live with the reroute from Newton- Mulvane, then west on the Transcon, but rerouting via OKC-Ft Worth is out of the Question, it would involve the UP,Ft Worth-Sweetwater,then BNSF Sweetwater-Lubbock-Clovis,then west on the Transcon,UP will say NO WAY and demand $$$ for "Improvements" ...
One other prediction is that the new higher speed FEC line is going to be a tremendous success, with a lot of positive spillover thinking (or success by association) for Amtrak. I wonder if this will improve opinions of Amtrak, or lead to more pushing for privatization of Amtrak operations (which w...
Enjoy the trip.
^^Excellent response. I would add that improvements in speed and frequencies begat more ridership and revenue, creating a virtuous cycle. One thing I haven't seen addressed is Texas. Huge, populous state with large cities. Houston and Dallas are investing significantly in public transit and densify...
I would also think that the Wisconsin Talgos are probably going to end up SOMEwhere in service in the near future although that doesn't necessarily have to be in Cascades service (although it makes the most sense since the people out in the Pacific Northwest are the ones with the most experience mai...
Excellent responses/predictions! Thanks. A couple of thoughts I would like to expound upon: In addition, if the speed upgrades continue to be implemented, the NYC - ATL line could shock folks with tremendous ridership, especially as the line hits WAS, populous cities in VA, NC etc. The running time...
Thing is, the task of combining and separating trains is done all the time at Albany, San Antonio, and Spokane all the time and was routine at Salt Lake City with the Desert Wind, California Zephyr, and Pioneer being separated or joined together. And multiple locomotive changes are made routinely at...
