This isn't the US, but apparently in Russia they just leave things where they are when the railroad shuts down!

While looking for something else I stumbled onto this.......seems like a unique piece for CSX fans.

Westr.....I don't doubt what you say at all, but I'm wondering if the way track is built and maintained today for all the higher weights of modern cars and locos, wouldn't there be other lines that a Big Boy could run, especially on a special occasion frequency?
I would guess, for the UP, it's a balancing act between cost and public relations value to the company. That, in turn is probably another balancing act between members of the board of directors who are either pro or con about steam. IMHO, I think that the chances may be better on the BNSF are better...
That spur to Bergen Brick actually originally ran off the passing siding on the north side of the main line. There was at one time, a dead end siding that ran on the south side of the main that started just west of Franklin Ave. and went almost to the station, The passing siding on the north side, w...
Does anyone have an idea of what the interchange patterns were between the Susquehanna and the L&NE at Hainesburg? Did the L&NE deliver coal that went east on the NYS&W? Was any westbound bridge traffic turned over to the L&NE and if so, where was it forwarded too? Thanks in advance ...
I have used strips of Masonite painted with a rough finish tan/grey paint ($3.99 at Home Depot). After the paint dries for a day, take a metal ruler and a dull Exacto knife and scribe across the strip at equal intervals to simulate the expansion joints in the concrete. A sharp Exacto used with a lig...
Mr. Norman, I wasn't taking issue with your entire statement, however, with the JIT culture that has become prevelent, non-import general merchandise will still travel by over the road carriers in a lot of situations due to the transit time differences. The stack trains have replaced long distance t...
"General purpose over the road trucing is likely dead".............That statement couldn't be further from the truth. If it were, then the hundreds of trucking companies wouldn't be constantly advertising for drivers, even during the current business downturn. Many of the largest over the ...
From watching the youtube video it appears that she is not only an enviormental and legal land use expert, but one in railroad track construction as well.
When I went to work on the EL in Jan. of '68, there were 3 freight jobs(First, Second and Third Northerns) on the Northern Mon. through Fri. I had occasion to get called to work from the extra list on the 1rst Northern job several times. The job started at 7AM and would be the one that went to the e...
254 and 256 were delivered in the silver with the thin maroon stripe along the hood. Here's a picture of 256 in Little Ferry after it was retired....it was never repainted into the solid silver scheme. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=776707 Here's a picture of 252 in the as-deli...
2 or 3 round trips a week can't possibly come close to supporting the costs of maintaining the 180 miles or so of railroad between Little Ferry and Binghamton, and I'm not trying to sound pesamistic. There were years when the stack trains were running everyday that the railroad didn't make money. Th...
Its kept in tact and under CSX / NS control, because it gives the appearance of competition in the tri-state area. Additionally, if the line was put up for sale or abandonment some other larger railroad (not NS or CSX) could quite possibly buy it to get in to the NY market and then look for trackag...
