How much new rolling stock could Amtrak have purchased for the cost of these constant new liveries and subsequent need for repaints over the past 15 years?

SDP40s: All delivered in Phase I (only new locos delivered in this livery?)? P30CHs: All delivered in Phase II? E60CPs: All delivered in Phase II? F40PHs: First 95ish delivered in Phase II, rest in Phase III? AEM-7s: All delivered in Phase III? P32-8s: "Pepsi Can" (modified Phase III) P40s...
The three roads were natural extensions of each other, and had a common heritage through George Gould. Was a merger between the three (akin to Burlington Northern, for example) ever considered? Or did the fact that they "split ways" pretty early on and developed rather different operating ...
This whole SL availability is nuts. Someone in the administration or Congress must require Amtrak to list evey single passenger car. That includes present condition of each and how soon any out of service cars can be returned to service. Especially the amount of time that it will take to return to ...

For the first time I saw the statement "The train didn't hit the truck . . . the truck hit the train". Looking at the pictures in this Yahoo news report, that may be why things ended up the way they did. https://news.yahoo.com/ntsb-investigators-look-fatal-missouri-145620118.html Given th...

Is it possible to run across the USA from coast to coast, only on double track (not on the same company's track all the way, obviously)? Or are there any gaps?
Wouldn't there at the very least be an SLII Transition-Dorm?
Wouldn't it just be Canadian Pacific?
So are they skipping Phase VI or is it just going to be the one anniversary locomotive? How much extra rolling stock, or returns to service of old rolling stock, or other service improvements, could've been made for all the dollars wasted on these constand rebrandings and then returning to the old?

Yep, just because it used the same "125" moniker means nothing. Boeing used the 717 model designation twice, and the 717-100 and 717-200 have absolutely nothing in common. Very off-topic, but there actually were three Boeing 717s - first what became the Boeing C-135 Stratolifter/KC-135 St...
Unfortunate, but at least they got a little over 20 years of use out of them. I'm guessing maybe they could've gone another 10, but I suspect they wouldn't have been around forever like the Amfleets even had the accident not occurred. I do hope the newer Talgos stick around for a while! https://www...
