Re: Grand Central Madison TERMINAL DISCUSSION THREAD

Rode into Grand Central this morning, since that's where the train I hopped was headed. I have to say, it's not particularly confusing to get from the LIRR track to the subway. It just takes a long time; they aren't as close to each other as the Penn Station LIRR tracks and the 1-2-3 or A-C-E subway...

After several trips to and fro using GC instead of Penn, my overall impressions are: • By the time I've walked from the 4/5/6 Grand Central subway stop to the platform where I am to catch the LIRR, it feels like I've walked all the way to Penn Station. I know it's psychological — the built-in expect...

Rode from Atlantic Terminal to Mineola, first time on the new track. Thumbs up all around. More was done right than not. It's a major accomplishment and everyone benefits. I do indeed wish they'd done three platforms at Mineola but they could insert that at some future point without extreme disrupti...

Why couldn't they make (for example) Rt 112 dive under track level ?

I'm wondering what impact this station will have on the tiny nearby Bellerose station. Of course I guess a lot depends on what route the new Elmont stop will be considered to be a part of. If it's Hempstead, well, they're about two football fields apart from each other, and Bellerose is one of those...

I see lots of progress at Jamaica Station on the new south end platform. It looks done. One odd thing: the track numbers are posted on the columns now and they're not 9 and 10 as I'd expect but 11 and 12. WTF?

I'm not sure why they keep referring to these as "new BRIDGES" when what they actually did was dig TUNNELS under the existing railroad tracks, adding supporting structures etc as they went. A railroad BRIDGE would be like the one on Mineola Blvd, yes?

Ignorant newbie question. I notice that there is an existing third track that appears for awhile between Mineola and Merillon Avenue stations. I think it has historically been used as a siding to let other trains go past, although I'm not sure of that. Will the third track project simply incorporate...

I'd like to see before-and-after (well, especially "before") pictures of Woodside Station, illustrating the changes when they modernized its appearance. I remember a much more rickety and neglected-looking Woodside station, although I don't recall the details. Are you referring to the old...

I have not been very successful finding photos online... I I'd like to see pictures of Union Hall St Station before the north side platforms were demolished (I found exactly TWO, one from 1929 which was the predecessor to the station I'm interested in, and one from the 1950s that has the platform in...

IMG_1861_sm.jpg IMG_1856_sm.jpg IMG_1893_sm.jpg There is a long-unused railroad bridge that the LIRR trains go under shortly after they pull out of Hunterspoint. The #7 train is aimed right at them just before it makes that last sharp swing to the right as it heads from Court Square to Hunters Poin...
