Amtrak Speeds in New York

by Patch Hog ¦  Sun Oct 29, 2023 3:55 pm ¦  Forum: Amtrak ¦  Topic: Amtrak Speeds in New York ¦  Replies: 16 ¦  Views: 2104

Is New York or Amtrak moving toward increased speeds West of Schenectady? Its encouraging to see 110mph on either side of Albany but running at that speed all the way to Buffalo would make the service much more attractive. There looks to be room in the right of way for 3 tracks. If one was dedicated...

Do that one day of you can find the money but get the Willets Point - LGA part built and open.
Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Even on a summer Friday?
I saw buses pulling up to the dock - plenty of people who didn’t have a decent train option.

Why such lousy service at Gananoque ?
During a visit, I wanted to do a quick round trip to Kingston - less than 30 minutes away.

2 trains / day and not great times.

Are they routing 3 and 4 through St Louis during the clean up? Would that add about 4 hours?

It’s a week since the schedule was announced and Amtrak.com still doesn’t show Ethan Allen to Burlington for a late august date.

That should have been available immediately.

Any reason as to why there aren't more direct Jamaica-Greenport trains in each direction? Why doesn't 254 pick up passengers at Jamaica and then run as an express to Ronkonkoma before continuing to Greenport? Running express to Ronkonkoma would draw a crowd that would disembark in Ronkonkoma after ...

The thing about the Newsday piece that made the least sense was blaming LIRR's accepting cars with flaws for the delays in receiving cars - seems backwards. If they'd held the line on defects, there be fewer cars in service. Reading about Kawasaki's performance at WMATA, LIRR and MNR tells me they m...

People freaked out about going East from the airport to Willets Point before going west to Manhattan. Imagine the complaining if they have to go to Jamaica before heading west - it would push the trip toward an hour. It would be easier for most Long Islanders but not for anyone heading to Manhattan....

PJ express trains will also benefit from not getting stuck behind a local or Oyster Bay train between Jamaica and Hicksville.

I haven’t seen a service plan but I assume that Montauk trains running express between Babylon and Jamaica will use the Central Branch and the express track between Hicksville and Jamaica when 3rd track opens. As it is now, unless everyone is on time, the diesel frequently gets stuck behind a local ...

Or they’ll leave her atop both and create a new lead VP for both. They’ve dreamed of combining them for decades.

Combined operations at GCT and Penn might be the excuse to pull it off.

Does anyone know if this ROW is wide enough for 3 tracks? Bi-directional passenger traffic and single-track freight would make this more viable.
