Regarding FEC freight trains was there an idea put forward to re-route these trains over the ex-CSX line that Tri rail now uses south of WPB?
One point that seems to be left out is that prior to 1973, Amtrak was to manage decline of most passenger train service. The Arab oil embargo caused a sea change in opinion. I feel that that action really saved Amtrak. Also, there is one other Amtrak service that operates in the black: Auto Train.
I would be curious to know how many of these routes Brightline could run, assuming they build up a healthy real estate portfolio.
I recall reading an article where the late Jim McClellan was quoted that NS makes more money hauling a single piggyback trailer from Philadelphia to Chicago than what Amtrak pays for NS to host all of their passenger trains.
Just looking at a map, the line through Winston Salem from Roanoke to Charlotte looks like it could have potential as an intermodal speedway if the numbers add up for NS. Yes, it would be quite a bit of work and cost, but if it is feasible, why not? I feel sure that NS has this in the back part of t...
Beware of what you ask for Mr. West Point, because these same NEC states could say to hell with you red states. We are divided enough as a country. We don't need to add more fuel to the fire. A partnership between Amtrak and the corridor states in which the costs are shared between both sides.
I wonder if this corridor is on Brightline's radar?
As far as adding track is concerned, I feel the states are better positioned to do this. Two perfect examples are VA and NC. VA is doing so by purchasing half of the RF&P sub and NC by way of the NCRR.
I recall reading somewhere that North Carolina DOT was considering buying Siemens trainsets for their Piedmont service. Is this in the works?
From what I have seen and read there are two factors that stand in Brightline's favor. One is that Brightline's business model seems to fit rather well with the tourist heavy Florida economy. This could be a double-edged sword as economic conditions could render this enterprise vulnerable to market ...
Of the total number of Siemens locomotives currently operating, exactly how many are experiencing serious operating problems? Of those that function normally, how are they able to keep running reliably and is there a common reason as to why those that failed do so?
I understand that the Newport News trains were being equipped with sleepers. With the consists of these trains semi permanently coupled, does this mean once again doing away with sleepers and the additional revenue they would provide?
In using the R line of NS from Charlotte to Columbia you must keep in mind that this line is rather curvy and hill and dale type. It will cost money to build stations along this route, as well as connect it with the S line to access the Columbia station. As far as SC goes regarding rail passenger se...
One thing that we need to remember is that the railroads own piggyback freight service took over what mail continued to be carried by rail.
