Yeah, I don't think population is the best measure, because everything surges in the summer months.
From my armchair, I'd say start out with some of those new Stadler units running to Providence, and add a one-seat ride if things take off

I was looking over The Diesel Shop's GE production rosters out of curiosity and came across two locomotives listed as delivered to LI. 23/25ts >7767 U.S. Army - Mitchell Field Garden City, Long Island, NY 18198 . >? U.S. Navy - Naval Torpedo Station 4 Montauk Point, Long Island, NY 15707 . 7/1942 I'...
The way i see it, BE has 2 use-cases. 1. Shunting locomotives on primarily electric lines, using the batteries for "last-mile" service. This has been proven in the past with NYC's Tri-Power boxcabs, and is currently being evaluated by CRRC for their next generation of shunting locomotives....
I think personally a bigger question that's gonna come up is "Why wasn't an adequate protection system installed, given the importance of the channel and the bridge?".
The HSTs arrived as complete trainsets, and are just being used along with the Talgos.
It has risen.
The HSTs are being used on the Interoceanic corridor. Tren Maya is using new-build units on the Alstom X'Trapolis platform.

A unit has officially been completed and is now under factory testing.
I don't think that they're having any swan songs sung yet, but there are definitely a couple GP38/40 styled machines, niche as they may be, on the market today - the PR/EMD20Bs, for example, and Brookville still markets the BL20s if i'm not mistaken.
I'd like to say that's what i meant, but I 100% forgot about the electric part of diesel electric.
Perhaps they're looking at getting 2? I thought the number 3 was being thrown around, although it may be yet another rumor. Would make sense, then - 2 on duty, 1 on backup.

I think something worthwhile to mention when discussing this in the context of the next car purchase round is that they're still planning like, 30 or so M9-platform locomotive-hauled coaches as part of the option orders, iirc.
A lot of electric vehicles have an advantage in torque. If the discussion about it being an EMD Joule platform is correct, they could squeeze quite a bit of traction out of it.
To be fair, re: comfort, I think it's at the point where they're anticipating such a big crush over the summer that it's having no coaches vs shitty coaches. I do agree that as time goes on the mistake of not purchasing additional C3s gets more and more visible.
