Re: Yorktown Heights Railroad Station to be Restored (New York Central Putnam Division)

there was a yard in Yorktown with a turntable. Reportedly the TT pit was located near the east end of the yard. The turntable pit is a way south of the station, behind what I think (not sure) is the town hall. It's fully intact, and the last time I was there it was so full of plants and flowers tha...

Re: Metro-North Hudson Line Electrification

Tom, I remember the EP-5s [the Jets] rolling by JO tower in Woodlawn in the late 60's. I believe only a few rush hour trains were run throughs. The rest of the day people changed at South Norwalk, IIRC. Until the end of the New Haven in 1968 there was more through service to Danbury than just the c...

Re: Metro-North Hudson Line Electrification

Going to reinforce what was said here, as someone who grew up along the Danbury Branch and knows the area well. The only reason the Danbury Branch was electrified back in 1923 was to eliminate an engine change for the Danbury through trains, and move the changeover for Pittsfield service. After the...

Re: New Hartford Branch

I believe the big customer in later years was Collins Axe in Collinsville, 6 miles down the road. They manufactured axes, sledgehammers and such. The New Hartford branch lasted into Penn Central days. The CNE was abandoned in the 1930's. The branch beyond Collinsville was pretty well destroyed by H...

Re: Last Station Built New Before Amtrak?

My guess, which has already been proven wrong, would have been the first Albany-Rensselaer train station built in 1968, by the New York Central (I think it was completed before Penn Central came into being). But this replaced the Albany Union station and moved things across the river to where now t...

Engine assignments Alb - NYP

I'm curious about something. We live near the Hudson line and so often see Amtrak trains go through. Now and then I will see one with two locomotives. Now, it's obvious that no train on that route requires two units for power so there must be some other reason, such as evening out locomotive availab...

Glad to hear about that. I live in Cortlandt (next town to the west of Yorktown) and often drive past the station, which desperately need the work

Question about "The Cardinal"

Has anybody out there been on The Cardinal lately? Reason I ask is my wife and I are planning to go to The Greenbrier resort for the holidays, and that train literally takes you right to the front door (Well, across the road from the front door .....) How is the quailty of the service? How is the ti...

Re: North by Northwest and Grand Central

That golden oldie showed up on TCM again last week so i want to resurrect the old debate about whether the platform scene was filmed at GCT or not. I replayed th scene on my DVD . . . and again . . . and again and I am certain that's track 34 at GCT. Since we live on the MN Hudson Line (in diesel te...

Re: Giulietti: Bar Cars Not Likely

First, I am distressed by the anti-alcohol sentiment I see on this forum, and which I have seen before. Geez, you'd think we lived in some damn dry county in Texas....... The economics of the situation are easy: it costs MTA, or CDOT, virtually nothing, and maybe absolutely nothing, to equip some ca...

Re: Harlem Line Extension To Danbury?

THis whole thing (i.e., Maybrook line to the Harlem) is utterly ridiculous and we should stop expending intellectual energy on it. First: Let's say you live in Danbury and drive to Brewster (or more likely, Southeast), park there, and get on a Harlem train. I would bet that if you took a stopwatch, ...

Re: new departure boards at gct

I saw one in service for the first time this week. Looks OK. My wife says the new ones look more readable.

BTW, I understand from an NYT article that the Landmarks Commission had to approve the new design.

Re: Giulietti: Bar Cars Not Likely

"NO" would be a dumb move. Bar cars in their subtle way contributed a lot to commuter morale and to their overall estimation of the service.

Re: 3rd Track for White Plains

More details on that matter 1. Yes the ROW is 4 tracks wide all the way to NWP. 2. There were once 3 tracks in White Plains station (the pre-high platform station, not the one there now). The third track was on the northbound side. I have heard people swear up and down on this forum that there were ...
