Re: Acela II (Avelia Liberty): Design, Production, Delivery, Acceptance

There is an Acela II parked at Philadelphia 30th Street Station today. It’s on the NYC side, in the yard. Indeed. It's actually been there for several days, I believe about a week. Yard workers appear to have moved it so it's more visible now. IIRC, that is the "second" set... that was su...

Amtrak's current schedule is far less than that. They're running one regional every two hours. Several trips I had booked had SO many concurrent cancellations that I have 4 changed itineraries in the app followed by just "this service has been cancelled" in bold red letters instead of the ...

I feel compelled to chime in on this because, for a change, the sentiments in this discussion are basically, "Amtrak shouldn't worry about catering to everyone", and similarly, "pay for what you want". The latter point is salient, the former, not so much. In every other modern na...

Eliminating crossings is worthwhile from a safety standpoint. I also believe speeds were raised as well but no time came out of the schedule due to increased dwell times at stations. Several minutes could he cut between 30th and overbrook while the rest of the line needs unbalance and interlocking ...

Europe has precisely the same problems with real estate and alignment that is just as expensive and (even worse) chock full of layer after layer of ancient ruins. In some cases the Europeans (and lately the Chinese) punt and build a high speed terminal outside the urban core (St. Pancras in London)...

Acela--Fastest Speed Between Adjacent Stops

So, We know that, whether we're looking between DC & NY, NY and BOS, or WAS to BOS, the Acela is a relative laughing stock as far as "high speed" trains (globally) go. Between Boston and NY, speed averages between ~62-66 MPH depending on the schedule. For DC-NYP, the current oft quoted...

There is still a grade crossing for farm equipment, I believe, between Mt. Joy and Elizabethtown. Yes, the three street grade crossings have been eliminated. I’m not sure if you would be saving much travel time but upping the speeds from 110-125 mph. I don't recall if private crossings count in ter...

You know, it's been years since all crossings have been eliminated and still no 125 MPH service on the Keystone line. What gives? All of the equipment supports 125, there are no crossings...is the track class not high enough? If not, why...and why go to all the trouble to remove the crossings?

Good question. Several answers. (1) Richard Anderson---> Not a good leader for Amtrak; you have an idea to reduce costs while charging the same, he's all ears. (2) For NY-Penn, it's not just Acela passengers. ALL first class passengers can use the lounge--sleeper passengers are included, and certain...

The dismantling of LDTs are not near. If they are, Anderson's dismantling is also near. Amtrak is a political organization as much as anything else. I fully believe Anderson is considering these moves, but, it'd be a mistake. Part of how Amtrak got 2 billion in funding this year, is by getting suppo...

Amtrak, having recently reduced its senior discount, has now re-increased it to 20%, for a 3-day sale, per an email I received earlier today (FYI to those who wanted to book anything). This has been a trend I've noted across the board over the last 5-6 months: less discounts, and "everyday low ...

More comfortable, less stressful, can be faster door to door if you don't live close to origin airport &/or have destination far from airport, more productive (as espoused by prior posters)...overall, more "humane". Also, no one has mentioned...(16) often but not always more scenic. 3&...

My uneducated guess on Anderson is, he's running Amtrak like an airline. Specifically, an airline that's losing a lot of money and is trying to cut routes and amenities to bleed less money. The Pacific Parlor cars are expensive. They're old-ish, unicorns for Amtrak, not many of them, and do not gene...
