They would have been better off with a plow, and not a spreader. With the all high platforms, close clearances and third rail, there are few places they can actually use the "wings" on it.

Slippy, I know the Conductor who Lost his dog. He never said it was from punching tickets, he said it was from repetitive motion, such as pulling car doors open hundreds of times a day, climbing up and down dozens of trains a day, and such. He was Granted his disability, he had spinal stenosis and n...

I remember the first time I saw one in service. Was working a Train that started out of hicksville during the morning rush hour. Every morning an express train from Ronkonkoma came through being pulled by an Alco century. Then one day it came through being pulled by a GP-38. I remember how different...

Could happen now? Happens more then you think. New Hyde Park was notorious for it.

X, seriously, if the RR is so bad, why do you keep taking it? Why not buy a good used toyota, and car pool with some friends. Maybe you could save some money that way. Share the cost of the car, and the tolls, and the parking, and the gas, and the insurance, and to maintain it. Oh wait, the RR comes...

There is a segment of the population that thinks Public transportation should be totally funded by taxes, and the ride itself should be without further cost. An example would be the galveston ferry in texas. I have a friend that works there, makes 40,000 a year with Medical and dental. The rent is 6...

The M-7's have a device on them that can be switched with a socket wrench. One of the positions is tow. This allows the engineer on an engine to actually release and apply the brakes on an M-7 from a Locomotive in tow mode. Worked the roustabout a few times, and that's how we did it when we took the...

At least 43 years, that would make the latest possible date as 1972. It was probably even before that. Probably 1968. That would make it 48 years. There are no employees left on the LIRR who were there when Caskets were carried on trains. They are all retired or have passed. I know ths personally be...

There were a handful of Conductors who did their Jobs By the book. As a result they got many complaints from the Passengers about how they were charged the fare because they left their tickets home, or were charged the penalty fare on the trains. Got to the point where a few started wearing small ta...

The M-3's were slightly different inside. Just slightly. The 2 air vents in the center of the cars eliminated a total of 3 seats, 2 on the 3 side, and one on the 2 side.Luggage racks were also different. the slats on an M-1 were horizontal and long, had a tendency to rattle, and the slats on the M-3...
