I remember seeing the MN M1/M3s in the Hillside shops. If I remember right, they (MN) had a very high OOS and sent cars to us for help, be it wheels or dead cars from snow I don't remember. Those did come under their own power, the later moves to Arch St were all by locomotive I believe

Brakes are different between LIRR M3 and MN M3. How so? https://www.railroad.net/post1461473.html#p1461473 That is rescue operation only, when being hauled by a diesel locomotive controlling brakes through a brake pipe. During normal service operation, under their own power, it utilizes P-wire, sam...

I could be wrong, I don't believe this is LIRR, unless the old MUs used them,

For certain, these are TA equipment. The electric brake plug was used on the R1-9 equipment.

Thank you all. That is a GREAT photo, actually building it. Looks like the windows had blinds on them too then.

Where the Atlantic Branch underjumps the main, east of Jamaica at 150th St, there was until now a small brick building trackside, protruding from the wall. Door and windows missing for decades, (not bricked over)

They just demolished it this last week.

Does anyone know what it was for?

Sure is a feather in the wind idea. LI M3s are too far beaten, and if that was a plan, 74 of them wouldnt have already been retired. As for compatibility, there are no major issues, but some. Third rail shoes notwithstanding, it may be as simple as replacing the shoes and hangars, BUT, how the conta...

Purely wild speculation here: 1. ACSES / PTC related or 2. To combat the increase of doors opening off platform. Crews not being aware of their consist size and stopping at a marker for a shorter length train. Coincides with the 'CHECK CONSIST SIZE' signs going up at many main stations. or 3. Some g...

Hey, look closely on the east car (A car) and they almost all Still say “no smoking” The M1/M3 the rule Was smokers would be the B (west)car It’s a relic from a bygone era that’s clearly visible today. The B cars also had a small flip sign on the vestibule dropped ceiling area that would flip the w...

I've long been puzzled about the cars being delivered in such random numerical order. Does anyone know why they are not delivered in consecutive numerical sequence? Years ago the M7's were not delivered consecutively either but there was a more orderly progression thru the numbers than with the M9'...

Several years ago, the FRA was completely opposed to any type of electronic documentation. I don't know if that has changed. I do know the LIRR is spending a fortune on fabricating the stainless folding tablet tables for the old MUs. spending a fortune? it will look like something made in 8th grade...
