Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

This goes back to Concord Coach policy of building their own (cheap) stations on cheap land on the outskirts of the towns they serve, regardless of what other stations may already exist. Boston South Station being an exception. The absolute worst is in Bangor where it is way out of town, and *suppos...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

You gotta be kidding me. How long in and out of the airport with TSA etc. Train might still be faster.

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

Also, not to harp on the new siding project but trains between Freeport and Portland are losing anywhere from 15 minutes to a lot more, at least on runs 684,685. Didn't look at the others. When is this going to get back to full speed? This has been going on for a while. Perhaps they have hit a glitch?

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

As I understand it Freeport is facing business problems in general due to the decline of shopping in brick-and-mortar stores. And (this is my opinion) over the last 15 years Freeport has gone progressively more and more upscale. Despite tacking the word "outlet" onto every store, there are few barga...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

Lot's of serious delays between Portland and Freeport last couple of days. What's going on? Something to do with the new siding?

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

I rode the Maine Eastern Tourist train several times. And yes indeed, it's very scenic. The Rockland station is pretty close (walking distance) to downtown (even closer to the Lobster Festival), although it is on the West end. That means it's a bit of a hike if you are trying to connect to one of th...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

It is good to see that some of these way-below-79 choke points are being addressed. What is the issue with the Wildcat - I would imagine it's the 3 grade crossings and proximity to suburbia. Not that the DE is ever going to influence the MBTA, although I did notice that a handful of MBTA trains do i...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

You could stay with 79 and still raise the average by getting rid of what seems like unnecessary slow downs. From North to South: 1) Limit of 30 around Freeport seems too extended before and after. Also train never reaches more than 60ish between BRK and FRE. 2) You'll never fix Woodfords, Portland,...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

George, I fully understand that. But as a frequent flyer I reserve the right to gripe about it.

Doesn't help that the Concord Coach has a similar problem. First NB bus at noon. First SB bus at 9:50.

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

My issue is not so much the sixth trip but the schedule skew caused by trains being housed in Maine. Southbound the first train is at 4:30AM and last is at 5:25PM. Northbound first train is at 9:05AM and last is at 10:30PM. The NB schedule has been a killer for me with only one train the whole morni...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

I might have to stand corrected here - this was not the intersection near the old Plaistow station? But the next one North up the line? If that's the case, then yes, they can be up to max speed at that point. Sorry. On the other hand if this was caused by trying to beat the train then it's even dumb...

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

They never go nearly that fast through there because the split to double track happens just to the south of that intersection.

Re: Amtrak Downeaster Discussion Thread

Assuming I have my junctions correct here, Royal Jct siding was originally claimed to be necessary to run all 5 trips to BRK, but they started doing that long before the siding was finished.
