Re: Amtrak Cancels Albany-area Toys for Tots Train

A little background on the Toys for Tots Train might be helpful.

Re: Empire Service this summer

Is there a good reason up the line to want people to be or not be in certain cars? Like platforms / no platforms, overall station too short, etc?

Re: Penn Station Emergency Repairs: Trackwork, etc.

One thinks it is possible to have upstate service of some sort from BOTH Penn and GCT. Clearly, there is some desire for GCT service from those with an NYC destination in midtown (or most anywhere besides Penn); just as clearly, there is a desire for NYP service for those who want NEC connections or...

Re: Hudson Line Fourth Track in the Bronx

More tracks could be added in the area of the "rock cut" in any of several different ways. None of them would be as easy as just laying down the track, and would probably engender some environmental objections due to filling in some of the Harlem river canal or whatever the official name of that wat...

Re: White Plains Station "Rebirth"

The ROW starts to curve just south of Main, so not ideal for a station. The empty ROW down there is pretty much identical in width to the area occupied by the current station and as you know, they didn't seem to work well with that width. The footprint of the station including the bridges appears to...

Re: Hudson Line Fourth Track in the Bronx

Well if they wanted to do more passenger business in the Bronx, they might need to have more room to pass stopped locals. For the most part, there seems to be room to do something along those lines, but there is the obvious 2 track chokepoint between Marble Hill and Spuyten Duyvil to deal with if yo...

Backshophoss » Thu Jun 14, 2018 1:56 am The CSX line to Canada is up for grabs, but is not an active passenger route, any shortline operation will not be interested in upgrading to passenger train standards, until it has a steady flow of freight traffic from both sides of the border. CSX can put a "re...

Everything about that 24 hour diner experiment sounded great; do any Amtrak suits read that magazine?

Re: Chicago to Montréal Service

Another thread was recently also talking about restoring service north of Syracuse, I presume on this same line, in this case also related to having a southern link to Binghamton, Scranton, etc. Perhaps this comprises the makings of a new N-S 'Inland Route', relieving the pressure on the overloaded ...

Re: July TRAINS; An "Ambash" Issue

However, as a Libertarian, I don't think that it's an excuse to waste money in one situation just because money is wasted in another situation. Given that there are those standing up for eliminating 'waste and fraud' on the rails while standing by w/r eliminating 'waste and fraud' on the tarmac or ...

I take it that there is a good reason why conductors could not be empowered to deal with this?

Re: White Plains Station "Rebirth"

They could build "Up" to find more space, by putting a 3rd or 4th track on a new upper level with its own new platform(s) and extending the stairs, elevators &/or escalators up an additional level as necessary. I don't believe that there are any physical impediments to this plan aside from the proba...

Re: Amtrak Diner and Food Service Discussion

Surely it isn't too much to have a supply of frozen meals and microwave or convection ovens to cook them. Doesn't seem to require a highly paid chef to do the cooking either. Now maybe ancient RR rules require overstaffing of food service operations, but perhaps that could be dealt with; not all rul...

Re: White Plains Station "Rebirth"

Not too exciting, is it? When "usb charging ports" and "enhanced customer comfort" are bullet points, it indicates a fairly minimal effort. OTOH, much of the stuff is basic reconstruction and redecorating, which isn't all bad, unless it comes with a big budget to a favorite contractor. Kind of disap...

Re: WoH Pascack Valley Service Status Improvements Work Stud

I thought these west of Hudson services were financed by the MTA, including the cost of the rolling stock, either by owning it directly or paying for it as if they owned it. So how could it be up to NJT to cancel these runs without some sort of collaboration with MNRR? Probably MN agreed somehow or ...
