Re: Portsmouth Branch Activity

Interesting! I stand corrected. This seems like a weird way to do this. I know train traffic isn't exactly regular over the bridge, but this design seems to be more maintenance intensive and will require the road to be closed whenever a train comes through, which was not the case with the old bridge...

You guys are all wrong, the rails are not embedded in the road deck, they're on a separate span underneath, just like on the old bridge.

Those "rails" you took a photo of are just expansion joints in the deck, on either side of the flush median.

They may well just be retired. They are more than 20 years old. While that's certainly not ancient, there's been plenty of other rolling stock retired earlier than that. They could also potentially find a home with NJT, since they also use 25 kV 60 Hz electrification. Other interested parties may in...

“These are the last of the bar carts on any part of the MTA system,” agency board member Mitchell Pally told The Post on Saturday.
I thought there were still bar carts at Grand Central? Or are those gone too?

I believe the last Motorail services (the West of England ones) in the UK stopped in 2005. The distances in the UK are minute compared to the US If Wiki can be believed, Motorail ended with the privatization of British Rail in '95. It was then resurrected by First Great Western as an overnight serv...

I.... don't hate it. I do think I prefer the NH livery just for history's sake, but this still looks pretty sharp.

Looking at the "Extremely Reduced Schedules", they seem to be the normal Saturday ones with some extra trains as necessary to ensure there is still some rush hour service. These extra trains are numbered 7xxx (interesting choice of numbers).

How many years are left till the aggregates coming out of Ossipee are gone? NHN will need to (or should) explore other options if they want to stay in business when the day comes and the pit runs out. NHN is owned by Boston Sand & Gravel. Are we sure they'd even be interested in staying in busi...

I suspect that those stickers they're putting on the maps to cover over the Gov't Ctr closure are peeling off... I've seen several lately that I swear had been fixed before.

Even underground construction needs access shafts. 99.9% of construction cannot be done without any impacts above ground. I'm sure they could theoretically get a permit to do some limited activity at night, but I doubt they could do enough to cut a year off the schedule. Note that my construction ex...

In regards to number #6, I don't believe it was any unions that said we only want to work Monday through Friday. If anything the unions would want it 24/7. More employees working means more individuals collecting pay to put food on the table. My guess would be those hours are for the residents in t...

The Minuteman Bikeway is popular enough and well-used enough that even if not a legal necessity (which I agree it is not), it would be a political necessity to include it in any reuse of the corridor as rail.
