Re: the discussion earlier in the thread on the old Miami SAL station that then served as the Miami Amtrak station in the 70s—I think it was here I'd posted a pic of the only remaining portion of the station, the front entrance, which was left standing as a lonely sentinel at the corner of NW 7th Av...

Could western, southern commuters get a rail option? Miami-Dade revives 836 train idea Commuter trains would run to Homestead, Doral and other suburbs under a revived effort to use CSX freight tracks for passenger rail, a strategy studied since the 1980s and once again a focus of transit planners. ...

2 1/2 hour AVE run from Madrid to Barcelona in real time

RENFE posted this last week on their YouTube channel—a real time video of the 2 1/2 hour AVE morning run from Madrid to Barcelona. (As I told a friend, it's kind of like the Yule Log for foamers.) I took the AVE last year from Madrid to Valencia and later from Seville to Madrid. Hands down the best ...

I grew up in Summit—I was a child in the 60s, and I remember going to see one of the last Lake Cities long distance trains stop at the station—and even I have no idea exactly what the tower was used for, nor does any other local railfan that I know. A guy who runs a Rahway Valley site (the RVRR conn...

Re: Lower Boonton to become the Essex-Hudson Greenway?

The subject really should be "Lower Greenwood Lake to become …." This section of the railroad never was a part of the Lackawanna Boonton Line. This morning's NYT article on the Greenway called it "the old Boonton Line," which stuck in my craw. Even the official project doc linke...

The FRA announced last week that there had been "full implementation" by the 2020 EOY deadline, which presumably includes FEC/Brightline. So what if any hurdles does SFRTA face in applying for use of the tracks downtown now?

The NJT 10 Year Plan came out three weeks ago, but this piece from today points out the fact that it contains no money for going beyond Andover. PA: No new money for NYC passenger train in New Jersey plan The proposed Scranton to Hoboken, New Jersey, passenger train may have hit the end of the line....

I'm assuming you mean the South Paterson station on the Newark Branch of the Main Line, and not the Lake View station in South Paterson that was on the actual Main Line prior to the merger with the DL&W. It was here , on Main Street opposite and a little north of Hemlock Street. Here's a photo: ...

Interesting that the bank (or whoever the architect was) would acknowledge the importance of rail to the area by designing a RR-station themed bank building. I note from looking at the older map below that the LV station was actually directly across the track from where the bank and strip mall are n...

I just ran across the video below, which was taken last October at the Market Street crossing of the Luzerne & Susquehanna in Wilkes Barre. It's intrinsically fascinating because it shows how today's motorists have no clue what a crossbuck requires them to do when a train is approaching (and it'...

Interestingly, based on its supposed 6.8 mile distance from the still-standing Deerfield Beach SAL station as shown in the 1936 timetable below, I've long believed the original SAL station for Pompano Beach was exactly where they intend to put this new station, right where SW 3rd St/Racetrack Road c...

Many millenials and younger can't do an arduous commute because they need 2 jobs to keep afloat. Things are so bad that the population of nuns is increasing for the first time in decades. When I mentioned that to my millenial daughter, her comment was, "It has job security and a place to live....

I posted a 1924 pick of the PRR Harsimus Cove yard in JC (with a bit of the Erie yard) not too long ago. It's not particularly smoky, but I suppose it qualifies as a "favorite similar shot." Harsimus Cove - small.jpg Link to original much larger size: https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7839/47...

Carl Hiassen needs no introduction to those of us in South Florida. This piece of his that came out in the Miami Herald this past Friday is, well, depressing. The younger generation (or "younger generation," as the esteemed Mr. Norman might put it) has gravitated to the urban core, rather than West Podunk. People will not be lining up to commute to NYC from Blairstown or anywhere across the Delaware. Even Andover seems like a waste -- you might...
