Charles Francis Adams wrote about it in The Atlantic in 1876: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/1876/01/the-revere-catastrophe/631411/ . This version is paywalled but I think it's possible to find The Atlantic from the 1800s free online via HathiTrust or another service like that. Accordi...

I was surprised to see a train of superliners pull into Champaign-Urbana as the Illini on Friday evening. Four coaches packed full (with one more among the cars on for axle count, but which the conductor told me they weren't allowed to open; I didn't catch whether that was bc they'd need another AC ...

Yes, it was. Thank you!
The Saluki has missed the connection with the Builder about five times in the past year, in case anyone is curious.

Hi! Does anyone know whether the northbound Saluki usually gets into Chicago in time to connect to the westbound Empire Builder? The scheduled arrival is 1 pm and the scheduled departure is 3:05 pm. I have been searching and searching for OTP history, but I haven't found a way to see what the chance...

I don't know of anyplace within fifty or sixty miles of my home where I'd have to go through security except the courthouse, city council meetings, and school board meetings (because now those are a target of violent people). Of course, I hate football and the louder kind of concert, so maybe I'm mi...

Amtrak locomotives pulling commuter rail trains, roughly winter or summer of 1997 obscure enough? I have a nice picture of one at Roslindale Village station.

Mbrproductions suggested light rail. Wicked said People need to stop with Fairmount being converted to heavy rail or light rail because the city needs the alternate route for CR and Amtrak. And other people have made the same light rail or rapid transit suggestion on and off the forum for years. I t...

Wicked and BandA, I think you're both missing my point. I am not saying that it would be quick or easy to start running the Fairmount line like an RT line. I am saying that for around the same amount of money, planning, construction, and changes in the way politicians and passengers imagine the line...

Readville is a looong way out from South Station for still being inside Boston--about as far out as Winchester and Waltham are from North Station. Just because in greater Boston all rail transit that's on the national rail network consists of fairly infrequent diesel push-pull trains using a mix of ...

Re: Federal, Night Owl, Twilight Shoreliner (Trains 65, 66, 67)

I just looked up the NYP to WAS schedules and noticed that 67 arrives in Washington at 4:02 am. Does anyone know who decided that was a good idea? That used to be a pretty full Boston-Washington train, even in coach, but now it kind of looks like Amtrak has abandoned the overnight market. I knew the...

Those pods look like a good plan for trains on eight- or ten-hour overnight schedules where the passengers would be asleep almost the whole time. I think there should be a lot of those trains, with sleepers that have no meals and no attendant but you arrive rested for your day in your destination, e...

I'd guess that the frequent service is attracting wealthier residents more than the wealthier residents are attracting better service. The Riverside Line opened in 1959, before most people bought their houses (or were born), and was always going to have more frequent service than the commuter rail.

I see that the trains from Boston and Providence are typically scheduled to arrive at Foxboro at the same time. Why not schedule one to get there fifteen or twenty minutes before the other one, so that no one has to sit waiting on a stopped train? Total capital cost: nothing.

If Chicago-Champaign-Carbondale, with mostly small online communities except for Chicago and Champaign-Urbana, and a lot of cornfields between them, can support two pair of corridor trains and a share of the City of New Orleans, surely Boston-Worcester-Springfield-Hartford-New Haven-NYP-pts west can...

I have nothing to add to the definition, but I am often unreasonably pleased that the easternmost part of the Northeast Corridor is called the Southwest Corridor and that there is actually nothing illogical about that.
