Re: Portageville Bridge Replacement, Future Tier Traffic

Amtrak uses 480v. That is why all Class1 office cars also use 480v.

Re: Chautauqua Branch Helpers

PRR had an engine house at Brocton NY where helper engines were serviced. The location is easy to find. It was adjacent to the Nickel Plate tracks west of Central Avenue.

Re: DL&W RR crossing over Erie: North of Alexander-pics

Interesting to note that the NYC branch to Attica from Batavia was actually the original main line of the NYC to Buffalo. It was relegated to branch line status after the direct line from Batavia to Buffalo was built. There is a very old culvert on the abandoned NYC somewhere near Attica with a date...

Re: Erie crossing PRR and NKP at Dunkirk?

B&LETCO used underpasses to cross those lines. Leaving Dunkirk for Fredonia the cars ran down Central Avenue which went under the steam railroads. B&LETCO ran along Doughty and then under the steam railroads. There is a map on page 124 of Bill Gordon's book on the B&LETCO.

Re: Where is MP36 on CSX between Buffalo and Erie?

MP 36 is about a mile east of CP 37 which is about half a mile east of the Harrington Road grade crossing. It would also be west of the former grade crossing at Waite Road which was removed several years ago. Waite Road was always a grade crossing. The removed over head bridge out that way was at Ne...

Re: Erie crossing PRR and NKP at Dunkirk?

Forgot to mention that Plate was adjacent to Middle Road grade crossing of PRR/NKP, just west of the grade crossing.

Re: Erie crossing PRR and NKP at Dunkirk?

Erie RR crossed PRR and NKP at Plate Interlocking which had a separate interlocking facility until the structure was destroyed in a wreck after which the interlocking signals were remoted to AK tower at the NKP/DAV crossing adjacent to Bennett Road in Dunkirk. AK was removed probably twenty years ag...

Re: When was B&O train order office torn down in Salamanca?

I have a very old postcard that shows this building in use as the passenger station, minus the tower, and what later became the passenger station identified as the dispatchers' office, minus the awning construction that was added when it became the passenger station. The older passenger station was ...

Someone had to line and lock that incorrectly lined switch - by hand. Then that person would have reported by radio to the dispatcher that the switch was correctly lined and locked. So the dispatcher's train sheet should show who lined and locked the switch. Apparently it is not a power switch so it...

South Carolina wreck

If the incorrectly lined switch is the cause of the wreck than doesn't the root cause have to be human error, not signal failure or any mistake by a dispatcher? A hand throw switch would not be protected by a signal nor would a dispatcher see the alignment on his board or computer screen. Wouldn't s...

There are WAG groups on Facebook and Yahoo. Both are active. There is a lot to see of the B&S all the way from Buffalo to Sagamore. 7.5' topographical maps are very helpful.

Re: CSX lines for sale / review

The goal is to merge a basically east/west CSX with either BNSF or UP to create a true transcontinental railroad. Then NS will be forced to merge with whichever does not merge with CSX. North/south lines will go to CN and CP. Only KCS can survive because it has direct routes into Mexico. If Amtrak d...

Re: 19000-series Wooden Cabooses

I have compiled an extensive set of data on NYC cabooses based on information culled from corporate asset cards. It isn't 100% complete but there is a lot if information. There is way too much for an e-mail but if someone inquires about a particular car I will look up the number. Contact me via e-ma...

Re B&P/WNY&P interchange at Salamanca: Where is the interchange? Old BR&P branch from East Salamanca into the city and the Erie is gone. I know Salamanca fairly well but cannot picture where and how the interchange takes place.
