Re: "FA-2/4"

Allen,

The NY&LE has an operating(?) copy of each of the upgraded (CN) FPA2 and FPA4.

Photo attached provides some external spotting information. Perhaps they might have some further details on internals, measurements, etc.?

Re: Road-running in NY?

There are numerous places inside Kodak Park, where tracks run in the street. However, they are not generally accessible to the public, and I don't know how much of the trackage is still active.

Re: Erie RR from Dayton Jct. to Dunkirk

MP366 is correct on the NYLE excursions. I rode a couple of them out of Salamanca. One of these, was to the County Fairgrounds in Little Valley, in either 1981 or 1982. I believe there were several excursions that were run in conjunction with the Salamanca RR Museum. My notes show Salamanca to Catta...

Re: Conrail, the Shawmut & Olean

Thanks to several friends, we have developed some more definite dates for the Tile Plant / Shawmut trackage in the earlier posts. The new Tile Plant siding, at MP 72.1 on the mainline, went into service on September 1, 1977. (ref. Conrail General Order 115) The Shawmut trackage to the back side of t...

Re: When was Salamanca to Cattaraugus pulled up

My info has it abandoned in 1990. Don't have the date of removal.

Re: Conrail, the Shawmut & Olean

This track was primarily used to serve the Tile Plant for raw materials supply. They put in an unloading shed on the mainline, circa 1980, with a pneumatic pipe running under E. State Street to the Plant.

The remains of the Shawmut were abandoned and torn up shortly thereafter.

Re: Eastman Kodak #10 caboose

The caboose that went to Canaseraga did not have a cupola at the time. It was added by that owner circa late 80s / early 90s. He was a prominent member of the PS&N group, as I recall. My (vague) recollection was that the car had been in or near OMID territory, prior to Canaseraga. It had been owned ...

Re: PRR piggyback sign in the weeds at SYR

I've had occasion to handle both a PRR TrucTrain sign, and an NYC Flexi Van sign. The difference was quite remarkable. As previously posted, the PRR sign was built like a tank - steel, with enamel paint. Very heavy. The Flexi Van sign was aluminum, physically smaller, and much lighter. Probably coul...

My earlier post for DL&W 3 was, in fact, timing from New York. Includes 20 minutes for the ride to Hoboken.

Re: Fastest New York to Buffalo?

I also first saw the light of this world in '61. I did some snooping in my rapidly decaying July 1939 Official Guide, and found the following: (all times are Westbound, NY to Buffalo; presumably Eastbound times are roughly similar) NYC train 25 - 7hrs 20 min - This was the 20th Century. However, you...

Re: Eastman Kodak captive freight cars

I inquired with a long-time KPRR employee, about wheel car routings, clearances, etc. He started about 1970; not sure of his retirement date, but it was less than ten years ago. His response follows. All the cars had brass bearing journal boxes that kept them off the outside RR. But that was after t...

Re: Eastman Kodak captive freight cars

Kodak donated one of the small tank cars to the Rochester Chapter, in the early 90s. EK-52. It was a 1930-built ACF car, as I recall. The two wheel cars were cut up on-site, along with several flat cars, in either December 2012 or January 2013. My description would be a flatcar, with additional trus...

Re: Typical Chessie power on coal trains to Rochester?

I have a Chessie ETT for the Pennsylvania Division. Timetable 3, effective July 1, 1980. With the exception of a handful of industrial sidings, there are no locomotive restrictions on either the 3rd Sub (Buffalo), or the 4th Sub (Rochester) There are other subdivisions (e.g. Salisbury Sub, S&C Sub; ...
