I see that there no what I call ' guide rails ' that prevent a flange 'picking' a frog point. I'm not sure that's the correct name. There are various YouTube LIRR videos that show both the 'Banjo' (great name btw) and the wigwag point types are in service. I think there is a mix of both at Sunnyside...

Yes, note the switch (frog?) motors to the right.
Moveable frog point means no more chance of picking the point and derailing and also the elimination of the guide rails.

From my official track charts for the Atlantic Branch there is a 4.1% grade between mileposts 4 and 5 uphill (westbound) to the East New York station. Looks to be a bit more than a quarter mile or so. They used to run freight with DD2 motors into the meat packing industry there. Evidently no problem...
