Re: The East Side Access Project Discussion (ESA)

After seeing photos of the new station, it looks like something out of the Jetsons. It's so clean, and they have these supports in the middle that apparently light up that are in alignment with the street below (ex. 46th Street). Aside from the Solari signs for the Upper (201-204) and Lower (301-30...

Apparently the funds he offered today will go toward finishing the tunnel box in Manhattan. Just a small amount of what's needed. The Federal government was supposed to cover half of the total cost - now at $16 billion - while NY and NJ would cover the other half.

Just walked through the new facility at GCT for the first time tonight. Really impressive scale. I came in from the lower level (dining concourse) of GCT. The Madison concourse is huge, running from 43rd to 48th Street. 4 massive escalator banks spread throughout to shuttle people down to the track ...

Happy to see this service added but I'm really surprised about the "matching schedules to ridership demands" bit. Trains are nowhere even remotely close to being full. I'm not even talking about matching pre-pademic levels, but just full, to the point of no empty seats. That said, I proba...

Hey, the 42nd Street Shuttle closed two tracks to widen the platforms. It'll never happen at Penn, but if it did it, maybe just to make another premium benefit for Acela. So the natural solution to the cramped platforms is to get people on and off them as nicely as possible, which is all they've ev...

I prefer the single level approach, as part of Penn's current problem is the old "exit concourse" that creates a dungeon like feel to the place. As for Penn South, it was actually originally part of Gateway. Cuomo's plan somehow made it a "NY" project, but it's now just reverting...

Agree, GCT and Penn were both products of the electric era. GCT was deliberately designed to be a massive "yard" style terminal where trains could layup. In fact Penn pales in comparison with only 21 tracks compared to GCT's near 60 passenger tracks. While Penn wasn't designed as a termina...

The expansion into Penn South wouldn't just benefit NJT riders. It will also benefit the future Metro-North trains that will run in from the West Side. And honestly, the whole NY doesn't benefit let NJ pay is a nonsense argument. Both states feed off each other. A LOT of people roll in from NJ and s...

I feel like the better way to solve NYP capacity issues is instead of building more tracks is to merge LIRR and NJT operations and run trains thru. I don't really see how that solves much. Right now NJT runs through trains to a yard in Queens for layup - why not add capacity in NYP so they can lay ...

Hochul Revises Cuomo's Penn Station Plan

So the Penn Station redevelopment plan is back on. The biggest changes are a reduction in height of the 10 towers that will be built around the station, and most severely the elimination of the track annex (adding Penn Station South trackage to supplement the existing 4 tracks). I think axing the tr...

NY Penn Station is like 10 minutes from Secaucus so it just seems like an unnecessary slow-down to add yet another stop. Plus there's literally nothing there. I don't know who would want to get on or off. And forget connecting w/NJT trains. That'll never happen, Amtrak is way off schedule too much t...

I believe these passes were for Transit Worker Unions - they allowed free travel on the railroad plus MetroCard usage in subways, buses, etc. I think they were issued as part of their contracts (e.g. free travel on the railroads). LIRR and MN had them. Not sure if they still use them but I imagine t...

When a passenger detains on Track 5 or higher does he have a choice of elevators or stairways that lead to the old Penn Station vs the Moynihan Train Hall? Does the old station still have ticket offices for Amtrak, LIRR and NJT? There is only one elevator/escalator up to Moynihan from the accessibl...

 by JamesRR ¦  Fri Dec 18, 2020 9:36 am ¦  Forum: Amtrak ¦  Topic: Penn Station Platform Painting ¦  Replies: 7 ¦  Views: 2107

As this painting/refreshing of the platforms continues, I realized it's likely tied to the opening of Moynihan Train Hall early next year. New signage has been installed around Penn that features directional signs toward Moynihan, so Amtrak obviously wants to clean up the platform experience, partic...

Thanks for all the updates. Glad to get some concrete details. While I'll miss the old 7 Ave connection, the new plan is truly the way a shuttle should be set up. That area has forever been a bottleneck.
