No crews do not like when railfans wear PPE vests. It makes us think you are an official or something is wrong. PPE around tracks is for protection, not to show your loyalty to our job. If you are railfanning and need a PPE vest then you are too close to the tracks. I suspect that part (not all) of...

I've recently dealth with ticket agents on the MetroNorth and Shore Line (on a trip to Ct.) systems, and it occurs to me that since I'm an older guy who would like to work for a few mor...

There could just be some impediment between you and the LIRR transmitter’s antenna. you could be in a spot where a hill or building obstructs the signal. I suggest that you PM member CPF363. He is an electrical engineer, and specializes in radio equipment. If you are a base station (at home), try a...

If they know your from out of state , they may be very cautious about you taking the training and then leaving. I would doubt they would for 1st time employers. Once you are covered by the agreement, you would then be covered as per said agreement for subsequent moves that are caused by the company...

On a scheduled railroad the schedule is the one and only consideration. A little loco damage here and there will never affect achieving the desired model of operational excellence. "Operational Excellence"? That is a far-removed concept for CSX! We used to call 'em, "The Slowboard Cl...

There are advantages to shop jobs like Engineer Spike listed. I started out in the shops as a laborer, never dreaming I'd end up a clerk/agent. But I got cut off, so I went on Line of Road. Mostly Extra Board. I, too, did not like the rotating shifts, never knowing when I'd have to work, when I'd be...

One more point is that some class 1 companies do force promotion, while others don’t. I think that some passenger companies put out advertisements for engineer trainees. These jobs are sometimes open to any employee. You could have been a coach cleaner, carman, track worker, or conductor. The spare...

Hello I am retiring from my current job with 20 years (at 49). I am looking to start a new career with the railroads. I won't bore you all with how much I love trains and such but I will say I used to drive trucks and operate heavy equipment and would like to work in this transportation industry. I...

Working in the railroad environment that I did, it was a mixed bag. A lot depended on the location and the particular management on board at the time. Southern Railway was generally very strict in the Transportation Dept. The shops where I first started were more like most other "civilian"...

NW 611 was built in 1950. As a kid, I saw NW steam in Salisbury as late as 1959 near an interchange track and close to the big Salisbury, NC (Southern) station.

I was recently down in Portland and was talking to one of the volunteers that work at the ORHC and he was telling me about how UP won't allow them to run their steam locomotive on their tracks, which is a bummed, due to insurance reasons. I'd really like to know what the average cost and/or require...
