SD70M-2s

back in the 60's through the early 80's, their colors were blue and yellow

that fec unit looks really really nice.

The new SD-70's are running up and down the railroad and have been for
most of this week. While I have not yet personally seen these new
engines, I have talked to people who have. All four of them 101, 102, 103
and 104 are on the property and in operation from what I have heard.
I have also heard that the two FEC passenger cars have been seen right
behind the engines on their trains, probably for EMD support personnel
who probably accompany these new units to take care of any bugs that
occur and to keep records as to their operation. I expect I will see them
sometime quite soon.
I caught six different trains last evening through Fort Lauderdale.

When was that unit damaged? That is the only photo I can find of the unit damaged.

Somebody is a few fries short of a happy meal today...

Tuesday night around midnight in the pouring rain I saw trains 107 and
226 go through Fort Lauderdale (they met on the double track through
town) and both trains had a leased unit in their consist.
I have to wonder if another order of SD-70's might be in the works
because I believe the original idea when they got the four new units was
to return all of the leased power?
Incidentally both 107 and 226 had long trains.

When I was in FL for the winter months working, Train 101 and Train 208 were safe bets to have the new units. I also saw Train 202 with the new SD70M's. FEC does have a lot more leasers than I expected.

This applies to the WHOLE RAILROAD, EVERYWHERE. It is one very good
operaion and it is a joy to watch.

I have a question though. From images I've seen, the SD70M-2's seemingly don't run together that much. Is there a reason why? Thanks.

In theory, these units will each replace two older, lower HP units. Instead of using them all on one huge train, they can replace older units on up to four seperate trains, saving fuel, and running "tighter" schedules. More units means more savings in operating costs, and possibly reduced operating times between terminals. Reasoning behind most carriers decisions for buying these type units.............

This is basically what I was told too, they want the most efficient use
possible out of these units.
I think they are willing to sacrifice a little bit of speed for reduced fuel
consumption on more trains.

I heard that FEC will be recieving 4 more SD70M-2's. And unfortunatly they will be painted in the Rail-America scheme of red anf grey.
