Florida East Coast Railroad 712 hit a dump truck on February 28th in Bunnell, Florida. The truck was possibly attempting to go around the gates, but failed. The driver died unfortently and my blessings go out to the family. If he or she was trying to go around the gates, I thought there was not enough room for a dump truck.

Seems to be another act of grade crossing stupidity, a driver thinking they can get through the crossing, when the train is either too close and the truck is too slow to cross. If he hadn't been so stupid and simply stopped and waited 5 little minutes this wouldn't have happened. :(

My feelings go to the engineer and whomever else was on that lead
locomotive. It is an awlful feeling to hit something or someone while
operating a train and knowing that there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING you can
do about it when it happens and you have hit a motor vehicle with
someone inside or hit a person on the right of way.
Incidentally, if your vehicle gets hit by a train at a crossing, you can
expect to pay for any damages to the train, locomotives or right of way
that you caused to occur. Unfortunately, there is no provision for the
crew on the train to recover the personal or psychologicial damage to the
crew on that train. This is where your sympathy should lie. The engineer
who was operating the locomotive or the conductor who has to go back to
look first hand at this disaster.
