A great Grandfather of mine, John Vance painted this pic but I don't know where it ran. He was from Maryland but was in Illinois by 1874. In case the type is too small, it says Rocket on the cab & is numbered 15. Any help appreciated.

If you can find the following, might give you some info:

Railroad History, Railway and Locomotive Historical Society.

* Bulletin .* 167 (Autumn 1992) "Rogers Locomotives: A Brief History and Construction List" by Peter Moshein & Robert R. Rothfus

Post photo on a photo sharing site so we can blow it up if you can. Is there lettering on the cylinder box?

Still hard to read, but appears the RL&MN is on the cylinder box? I looked that up, and there is an RL&M which was the Rangley (sic) Lakes & Megantic, but more likely the builder Rogers Locomotive & Machine Works [RL&M].(Not sure what the italic "N" is for) A record I found states that Rogers built the following very similar lower numbered locos for the NH&D (New Haven & Derby Railroad) {subsequently the NYNH&H in 1892). #15 is not on that particular roster, so perhaps went to another railroad in about that time frame.

Livery Builder Bldr# BldDate Type HRR# NH#1892 NH#1904 Retired
NHD&A #1 RL&M 1857 02/13/1871 4-4-0 47 497 --- <1900
NHD&A #2 RL&M 2083 06/13/1872 4-4-0 48 498 --- <1900

Yes, that is RL & MN, with the N italicized, which is a little odd, but between the wheels there it also says Rogers Locomotive. thanks for the info
