Hillside workshops in NZ are rebuilding br MKII carriages for use in New Zealand . they [retty well strip the carriages down to the bare bones , replace any rusty structures , then reclad etc . 1067mm bogies are put on , plus nz air conditioning etc , and the commuter cars have 2 sets of double doors put in the side .
Why go to all that trouble ??? . well , they say it saves on the design and engineering work . so they're quick to get into service , theyre relatively cheap to buy , and they fit our loading guage .plus providing local jobs .

Unfortunately as the vidoe also notes , the govts posponement of the regional fuel tax ( election coming up ) , means the new electric trains can;'t be funded in the near future .
